In 2020, two new stations will open in Tokyo: Takanawa Gateway and Toranomon Hills Station.

The new station, "Takanawa Gateway," will open on JR East's Yamanote Line between Tamachi and Shinagawa stations in spring 2020. The name for the new station was selected from over 64,000 entries submitted through a public contest in June 2018. The reason for the selection is that "this area has been bustling since ancient times as a gateway to Edo, with highways running through it, and is a historic area where a railway connecting the region was opened in the Meiji era," and the new station was chosen "to contribute to the development of the entire city as a hub connecting the past and the future, Japan and the world, and many people."
By the way, the names with the most applications were "Takanawa" in 1st place, "Shibaura" in 2nd place, and "Shibahama" in 3rd place.

The lighting designer for the station building, which is currently under construction and designed by architect Kengo Kuma, has been selected as Mende Kaoru. Mende is also responsible for the illumination of Tokyo Station's Marunouchi Station Building, Kyoto Station, Roppongi Hills, and other buildings. Based on the concept of "a station building with a warm light that will become a landmark of the city," the large roof, a distinctive feature of the building, will be illuminated to create a concourse bathed in soft light.

Tokyo Metro is aiming to open a new station, "Toranomon Hills," between Kasumigaseki Station and Kamiyacho Station on the Hibiya Line before the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Final completion is scheduled for 2022, and at that time the new station will be connected to new buildings such as the "Toranomon Hills Station Tower (tentative name)," which is currently being constructed as part of the surrounding redevelopment project. With this in mind, the name "Toranomon Hills" was chosen as a clear, easy-to-understand name to represent the new station's integration with the city.
Toranomon Hills Station will also function as a transfer station to Toranomon Station on the Ginza Line.
