Inspired by the Asian artistic tradition of depicting the natural world, Jaeger-LeCoultre adorns its Rendez-Vous Sonatine "Peaceful Nature" model with three new timepieces. The joyous song of nature, deeply imbued with traditional Eastern symbolism, is rendered through the timeless skills of the Jaeger-LeCoultre Métiers Rare® workshops, featuring lacquering, miniature painting and gem-setting. A fusion of Eastern and Western artistic traditions and craftsmanship, its intricately decorated dials and highly refined mechanisms celebrate femininity with grace and timeless style.

Drawing inspiration from Asia's centuries-old artistic tradition of depicting the natural world, Jaeger-LeCoultre adorns its Rendez-Vous Sonatine "Peaceful Nature" model with three new timepieces. Celebrating precision and artistry through feminine and elegant time displays, the three new creations fuse Eastern and Western artistic traditions, combining the richness of rare decorative arts with the refined techniques of Fine Watchmaking.
As joyous songs of nature, occupying a special place in Asian artistic traditions, the three new Rendez-Vous Sonatine watches bring together three decorative arts perfectly mastered by Jaeger-LeCoultre's Métiers Rares® (Rare Craftsmanship™) workshops: miniature painting, lacquering and gem-setting. The lacquers used possess unparalleled transparency and rich brilliance, connecting Asian craftsmanship with European style. An ancient technique believed to have originated at the end of the Neolithic period, lacquer was first introduced from Asia to the West in the 16th century. Prized for its noble appearance and exotic origins, it has since exerted a profound influence on European art and taste.

Plants and animals, believed to possess special powers and properties, have long been highly symbolic in Asian cultures, and natural scenes play an important role in Asian art history. For centuries, artists have meticulously observed the natural shapes and structures of plants and animals, recreating them with great sensitivity and precision.

Nature painting reached its zenith with "flower-and-bird pictures" (known as kacho-ga in Japan and Hwajohwa in Korea), although these subjects were not limited to flowers and birds, nor were these elements always depicted together. Interpreted by Jaeger-LeCoultre's designers and Métiers Rare® artists, this tradition is expressed on the dials of the new timepieces, combining the finest techniques and exquisite craftsmanship of lacquering, miniature painting and gem-setting.
Three dials, three depictions – each conveying a powerful symbolic story
Peaceful Nature – Crane: A crane (known as a tsuru in Japanese) soars above a pine tree against a backdrop of deep blue-green lacquer, its wings arching to match the curved lines of the dial. Revered throughout Asia and considered auspicious, the crane embodies happiness and exhilaration. Believed to live for 1,000 years, it is a symbol of longevity, and as they are monogamous, they are often featured in wedding decorations, signifying a long and happy life for the couple. As pine trees are evergreen, they are also a symbol of longevity and virtue.

Peaceful Nature – Kingfisher: Delicately depicted on the gold-brown dial is a reddish quince branch. The tree, also a symbol of longevity, blooms again each spring, renewed with vitality. Perched amidst the red blossoms is a kingfisher (called kawasemi in Japan and cuiniao in China). A harbinger of summer, the kingfisher is a beloved figure in nearly every cultural tradition, symbolizing beauty, virtue, loyalty, devotion, faithfulness and a happy marriage.

Peaceful Nature – Koi Fish: Against the backdrop of a black dial, a vibrant orange koi fish swims beneath the surface of a gently rippling pond. The outstretched willow branches that surround it symbolize spring and, therefore, romance and feminine charm. Balanced against the delicacy of the willow, the powerful koi fish bestows purpose, courage and perseverance in the face of adversity, and is believed to bring success, abundance and good fortune. Craftsmanship, artistry, infinite patience. Entirely handcrafted in the Jaeger-LeCoultre Métiers Rare® workshops, the intricate composition of each dial is brought to life by artisans with incredible grace and precision in a process that takes weeks to complete. First, artisans prepare the dial surface to its stunning beauty, then apply layer after layer of gradated lacquer colors to create a radiant backdrop. The lacquer layers must be fully hardened before painting can begin.

First, using only my eyes and hands, I apply tiny dots of gold lacquer, imitating the maki-e technique (a technique perfected in Japan during the Edo period, in which gold powder or gold leaf is sprinkled on wet lacquer to create a gradation of color). Next, I create the intricate image with thin, detailed brushstrokes, much like an oil painting on canvas, but on a very small scale. This process takes 35 to 40 hours, requiring patience and intense concentration. As a final touch, tiny gold paillons (gold leaf) are carefully applied to highlight specific sections of each image. These miniatures, rendered with lifelike detail and a sense of incredible movement and depth, are imbued with the artist's personality and passion, each one subtly different. Finally, multiple layers of translucent lacquer are applied, sealing the finished image in a lustrous, durable coating.
The resulting asymmetrical yet beautifully balanced dial of the Rendez-Vous Sonatine is completed with the collection's signature floral hands and numerals. The applied numerals, varying in size, form a crescent moon that envelops the delicate image. A delicate oval ring of diamonds beneath the applied numerals draws the eye into the image and highlights the brilliance of the grain-set diamonds on the bezel. Visible through an oval aperture at the center of each image, the night/day indicator rotates once every 24 hours, symbolizing the endless, light-hearted movement of the sun, moon, and stars.
An elegant gold star set around the edge of the dial indicates the time for special rendez-vous or meetings and can be set using a second crown on the side of the case. When the appointed time arrives, a gong hidden within the watch's mechanism is struck once, producing a beautiful chime to announce the time.
This poetic and innovative expression of femininity is thanks to the Jaeger-LeCoultre Manufacture's sophisticated Calibre 735. This automatic movement features a chiming complication developed especially for the Sonatine, as well as a night/day indicator. The mechanism's elegant complexity and delicate details can be admired through the transparent sapphire case back.

These precious timepieces are completed by an alligator strap that matches the dial color. It has a beautiful, lustrous polished finish and fastens to the wrist with a pink gold folding buckle.
With an intricate dial that blends seamlessly with a highly sophisticated mechanism that exudes femininity with joy and elegance, the Rendez-Vous Sonatine "Peaceful Nature" models demonstrate the technical and design excellence cultivated by the artisans of Jaeger-LeCoultre's prestigious Métiers Rares®. Perpetuating the cultural exchange between East and West that has been so important to the world of art for centuries, the new Rendez-Vous Sonatine timepieces, each limited to just 10 pieces, are available exclusively at Jaeger-LeCoultre boutiques.

About Stellar Odyssey In 2022, Jaeger-LeCoultre pays homage to the astronomical phenomenon that formed the very beginning of how mankind measures time. From simple moon phase displays to highly complex perpetual calendars, equations of time, star charts, lunar nodal and periapsis, astronomical functions have played a key role in Jaeger-LeCoultre's portfolio of horological complications since the Manufacture's founding. Having mastered all three units of time – solar, lunar and stellar – Jaeger-LeCoultre's watchmakers are constantly innovating, creating highly sophisticated and precise mechanisms that not only display but also predict astronomical phenomena. This year, Jaeger-LeCoultre launches Stellar Odyssey, an interactive exhibition and a series of themed events. Other exciting programs include inspiring collaborations with visual artists and mixologists, as well as celestial-themed "Discovery Workshops" at Atelier d'Antoine. And with the Stellar Odyssey, discover how the mysteries of the universe are translated into the micromechanical wonders of your wrist.
