An exhibition of Spanish painter Antoni Taure's "Islands of Light" painted with fantastical contrasts at the Chanel Nexus Hall

Event Date:2019.01.16-02.14
Jan 2, 2019

CHANEL NEXUS HALL will host the Antoni Taulé exhibition "INSULA LUX: Island of Light" from January 16th to February 14th. Born in Barcelona, Spain in 1945, painter Antoni Taulé qualified as an architect in Barcelona in 1970. Afterwards, he began working on painting, photography, and stage design, exhibiting in numerous solo and group exhibitions at museums and galleries around the world. He has also created stage sets for renowned theaters around the world. This exhibition, his first solo exhibition in Japan, will feature paintings and photographs created in his distinctive style on the theme of "Islands of Light." This series, depicting the landscapes of Formentera, Spain, which has been one of Taulé's bases since the 1970s and has long been a source of inspiration, features landscapes of the island. Each work creates a dreamlike contrast between the light streaming through the openings and the cold darkness of the interior spaces, and the uneven light is rich in subtle nuances.

The works on display are divided into recent paintings and works painted on top of old photographs. In both types of works, the boundaries between light and darkness, reality and fiction, existence and non-existence, color and achromatic color, and infinity and finite are beautifully depicted within a single space, and in most of the works there are no people, creating a space filled with anxiety and expectation, as if something has already happened, or something is about to happen.

Viewers who visit "Island of Light" will be enveloped in the unique aura emanating from Taule's works, and will experience a mysterious sensation.
