"Illustrated Signs and Symbols" by Adrian Frutiger, a master of modern typography, will be released by Kenkyusha on June 20th, with translation supervised by Hitoshi Koizumi. Adrian Frutiger is a Swiss-born designer. He has designed famous fonts such as "Univers" and "Frutiger," as well as signage systems for public institutions such as Charles de Gaulle Airport in France. This book is a true "morphology of symbols," perfected by Adrian Frutiger through years of practice and contemplation. Drawing on examples from around the world and throughout history, Adrian Frutiger explains how signs and symbols, as visual expressions, are essential and indispensable means for recording and communicating human thought. From ancient hieroglyphics to Japanese family crests, Native American animal drawings, and modern corporate logos, Adrian Frutiger freely discusses everything from these concepts. This book covers not only the fields of art, graphic design, and decoration, but also areas of interest such as the history of letters, semiotics, visual culture in general, and the interpretation of images. It also features over 2,500 hand-drawn illustrations by Adrian Frutiger.
The book is based on the English version, "Signs and Symbols: Their Design and Meaning" (1989), and was translated by Tomohiko Koshi. The translation was supervised by Hitoshi Koizumi, one of Japan's leading typographers.
