Hiro Nishiuchi's healthy beauty is the reason she was crowned runner-up at the 2014 Miss Universe Japan pageant. She now participates in numerous sporting events, including marathons and triathlons, and is active as a Tanita image model. "Inner beauty is more important than just outer appearance," says Nishiuchi. She also enjoys dining out and drinking with friends, so how does she maintain her beautiful figure? We explore the secrets to her beauty, including her daily workout routine, her body care routine, and how she maintains her mental state while striving for beauty. -Did your mindset change through your Miss Universe challenge? It changed dramatically. Until then, I had the image that "models have to be thin" and "the thinner the better." I thought, "If I do this job, I'll have to give up my favorite exercise and eating." However, the first piece of advice I received about my quest for Miss Universe was the exact opposite: "Eat more and exercise more." The idea that a healthy diet, good exercise, and adequate sleep can strengthen your mind and improve your overall beauty was a real eye-opener.
--Was it difficult to change your mindset?
To be honest, I was afraid to eat at first. But someone told me, "Even if I gain weight, just think of it as building muscle," and I gradually changed my mindset. It's really important to apply body cream every day, feel my firming muscles, and look in the mirror to see my toned lines. I have a large mirror in a place where I can see it the most, and I have lots of photos of my ideal body parts hanging up. I encourage myself, thinking, "These people have achieved this, so if I work hard, I can do it too someday!"
--How much workout do you aim to do each day?
Depending on my schedule, I run 5 to 10 km in the morning. When I get home, I take a shower, go to work, and after work, I go to the gym and bike and swim 1 km, then do hot yoga and strength training. When I get home, I stretch while watching TV and do 30 sit-ups, 30 back exercises, and 30 side exercises. I really want to do 100, but it's so hard I can't seem to do it (laughs).
--Isn't it hard to keep up with your workouts when you're so busy?
I look at my work schedule the day before and plan my day. The days just fly by. If possible, I'd like to run for an hour every day, do strength training, and swim three days a week. I also do hot yoga and strength training... Sometimes I find myself laughing and wondering, "What am I aiming for?"
--That's stoic!
I don't think of myself as stoic at all. My parents were always into sports, and our family home in Fukuoka was near the coast, so I used to run with my father every morning when I was a student. I guess that habit is still with me today. My cousin also says things like, "I ran 50km," so I guess it's in my blood (laughs).
--I think a lot of people find it hard to stick to it...
I think the important thing is to make it a daily routine. It's important to start at a pace that you feel you can keep up with. Try some slow yoga or dancing. When I don't have time, I dance to music at home (laughs). Exercise isn't just about intense running, so it's important to keep moving your body in any way you can.
--Is there anything you pay attention to in terms of diet?
I love sweets, and sometimes I make my own sweets. So, when I eat, I don't generally hold back. I think stress can lead to rebound eating and overeating. I've tried to change my mindset to, "When I eat, I eat. I'll make up for it by moving around" (laughs). However, I eat in the following order: salad first, then soup, then meat or fish, and finally carbohydrates. I heard that this helps prevent blood sugar levels from rising, so I try it.
--What other body care routines do you do daily?
I use steam baths every morning to help drain my lymph nodes.を 楽しみです。 English: I learned this at the Miss Universe Beauty Camp, and I spend about five minutes every day pressing acupressure points to lift my skin and massaging it. I'm prone to swelling, so it's essential. Lately, it's become a habit, and I sometimes find myself pressing acupressure points without even realizing it.
--So, what does Nishiuchi think a "beautiful woman" is?
Someone who enjoys life. I think a natural smile is the most beautiful expression on a person's face. I too would like to polish both my appearance and my inner self and aim for total beauty. Skincare and dressing up are all about having peace of mind. I want to enjoy each day and do all the things I love. That positive attitude will surely show on my face. I hope everyone reading this enjoys every day.
"The theme was 'healthy and fresh,' which is Nishiuchi's charm itself," explains Nami Kadowaki of Isetan Mirror Makeup & Cosmetics, who was in charge of her makeup for this look. The key to creating a healthy look is a flat finish that retains a hint of pure youthfulness. Eyeliner is applied only to the upper eyelid with a pencil eyeliner (Isetan Miller Beaute Eyeliner Pencil #01), and Lancôme Grandiose mascara is used. Achieving a natural, airy look with natural-looking eyes is another technique. Trendy thick eyebrows can also be made to look more natural by keeping the line straight and drawing them with the feeling of increasing the amount of hair. The products used are Addiction Eyebrow Pencil 01 and Chanel eyebrow powder, Le Source de Chanel #20. Finally, a coral lip color accentuates the freshness. Orange and green are perfect colors for the refreshing early summer, but coral, which blends well with the skin, is a particularly popular color. This time, I layered RMK's new lipstick (color 09) over Yves Saint Laurent Beaute's Volupté Tint-in-Oil 3 gloss to create a fresh, dewy look.
