This is the fifth installment of FASHION HEADLINE's conversation series, brought to you in conjunction with the launch of Ginza Mitsukoshi's dress-up rental app, "CARITE." Along with introducing rental items, we'll discuss dress-up concerns by topic. This time, we'll finally discuss the topic of covering up body shapes, a concern for adults. Stylist Chie Hosonuma will answer!
【Tips.5】What are some effective ways to cover up those troublesome lines around your upper arms and thighs?
One thing that's clearly different from when you were younger... That's right, your body shape. Standard dress elements like sleeveless tops and fit-and-flare silhouettes just don't feel right. This is a concern for many adult women. The solution is, of course, professional techniques.

Long-sleeved lace dress (rental price 10,000 yen), tulle skirt (rental price 5,400 yen) / both LUGA, others stylist's personal itemsFH Editorial Department (hereinafter FH): There are many people out there who find that the dresses they wore in their youth no longer suit them, and it's not a matter of trends or design. I'm one of them. However, when I try to hide my figure by limiting the amount of skin I show, I end up looking unfashionable, which is a problem.
Stylist Chie Hosonuma (hereinafter, Hosonuma):In our previous talk, we talked about how covering up or layering your skin can make you look unfashionable. It's one thing if it's just your body line, but when it comes to your upper arms, thighs, and other extremities, it's important to "conceal them well," so choose something with sleeves and a long length. This time, I selected a dress from LUGHA, a beautiful pastel color.
FH: Showing too much skin is a big no-no.
Hosonuma:You can easily create a relaxed look without showing too much skin. This LUGHA dress has a clever design, with lace accents on the sleeves, which cover your upper arms while also adding a touch of sexiness. It's not see-through at first glance, and you only notice it when you get closer—a surprising detail. The pleats peek out from the slits at the hem, creating a light look, and the natural flare at the hem covers the lower half of the body.

FH: Wow, this really is a one-piece outfit.
Hosunuma: The key to this look is layering a tulle skirt on top. Just adding tulle instantly elevates the party vibe, and the added length creates a more mature look. The dress itself has a soft color, so I used a darker color to really tighten up the overall look. I chose shoes with a sharp design to keep the sweetness in check. Using color to tone down the outfit is also an important element in preventing it from looking too casual.
FH: As we said last time, a sense of overall balance and addition and subtraction are important for adult dress-up styles.
Hosunuma:If you eliminate heaviness by choosing materials such as lace and tulle and add definition with the use of color, you won't look unfashionable even if you're covering up your figure. Adults have the skills to solve problems based on their past experiences, so let's use some small techniques to win!
