Photographer Takashi Suzuki's "Form-Philia" exhibition at IMA Gallery, featuring a new series

May 29, 2015

Photographer Takashi Suzuki, whose work explores the relationship between vision and perception, will be holding his solo exhibition "Form-Philia" from May 29th to July 12th at the IMA gallery inside the IMA CONCEPT STORE in Roppongi.

The title of this exhibition, "Form-Philia," is a combination of "Form," meaning shape, and "Philia," meaning taste or predilection. Three series, including his signature works "BAU" and "ARCA," as well as new works, will be on display during the exhibition.

The "BAU" series, which garnered popularity at last year's photography fair "Unseen" in the Netherlands, combines colorful sponges to create various forms. By combining sponges of various colors and shapes in diverse patterns against a black background, the everyday sponges are transformed into the "buildings" and "structures" that "BAU" represents, revealing a different side to them. This time, a selection of 500 pieces from the series will be exhibited in an installation tailored to the space of the IMA gallery. "ARCA" is a series of works that capture shadows from the front. Photographed with a large-format camera and enlarged, the images are stripped of contours and size, revealing new structures that transcend the original meaning of shadows. The exhibition also features a new series of works, montages of photographs of Japan's chaotic houses, depicting strange landscapes created by the overlapping of buildings. A related event will be a talk show, "The Relationship Between Photography and Form," featuring critic Hidetoshi Fuse and Takashi Suzuki on May 30th. The talk will explore the evolution of Suzuki's work and the relationship between photography and form, tracing his photographic history and exploring what he is trying to capture through the form of his subjects. A talk show, "Interpreting Suzuki Takashi's Work Through Art History," will also be held on June 21st, featuring a conversation with art journalist Yoshio Suzuki. Suzuki Takashi will talk about art history, which is closely related to contemporary artists, from the photographic thinking and concept creation methods he learned in the United States and Germany to how to output his work.
