Limited-edition winter artworks will be available at Toyosu's "teamLab Planets TOKYO DMM.com" for two years

Event Date:2018.07.07
Dec 20, 2018
teamLab's massive immersive space, "teamLab Planets TOKYO DMM.com," opened in Toyosu, Tokyo, in July 2018 for a limited two-year run until fall 2020. This facility is an evolution of "DMM. Planets Art by teamLab," which opened in Odaiba, Tokyo in 2016 and closed after 47 days with wait times of over six hours. Spread across a total of 10,000 square meters, it displays a series of gigantic immersive artworks. Starting December 26th, new works will be added, including a winter-only artwork and a new universe. The flowers in "Drawings on the Water Surface by Carp Dancing with People - Infinity," a work in which carp walk through the water, change into winter attire as the seasons change throughout the year. The carp swimming on the water's surface are affected by people walking by, and when they bump into people, they transform into winter camellias, cineraria, and other winter flowers, which then scatter.

Also, "The Infinity" is an interactive piece where a cosmic space, expressed through a collection of light, extends infinitely in all directions. A new element has been added to "Infinite Crystal Universe," allowing visitors to create their own space by using teamLab's exhibition app "teamLab" to drop elements of the universe from their smartphones.

The exhibition includes "The Infinite Crystal Universe," a significantly evolved work from 2016, in which a cosmic space of light spreads infinitely in all directions; "Floating in the Falling Universe of Flowers," a huge dome-shaped work; and "Drawing on the Water Surface by Koi Dancing with People - Infinity," a work on the infinitely expanding surface of water. It also includes "Transforming Space, Expanding Three-Dimensional Existence - Free Floating, 3 Colors and a New 9 Colors," a new, gigantic immersive space filled with countless floating spheres of light that continue to move organically. The exhibition is comprised of a group of gigantic, physically immersive works based on the "Body Immersive" concept, a concept that teamLab has been working on for many years. In these works, the entire body is immersed in the work, blurring the boundary between the work and the viewer.

"Body Immersive" is the idea that digital technology can be used to separate the artwork from the canvas that mediates it, making the canvas transformative, or to immerse the entire body in the artwork through a visual illusion created by continuous, dynamic behavior. This blurs the boundary between people's bodies and the artwork, providing an opportunity to rethink the relationship between oneself and the world. As the world changes due to the presence of oneself and others, the self and others become one continuous entity, blending into the same world, and the relationship between oneself and others changes.

"The Infinite Crystal Universe"
teamLab, 2018, Interactive Installation of Light Sculpture, LED, Endless, Sound: teamLab

"The Infinite Crystal Universe" is an interactive artwork in which a cosmic space is expressed through an aggregation of three-dimensional light objects, spreading infinitely in all directions. While pointillism is a pictorial expression created through an aggregation of dots, this artwork creates three-dimensional objects through an aggregation of light dots.

This space is created as people drop elements of the universe into it using their smartphones. Each summoned world influences the others and is also influenced by the presence of people. The artwork is forever changing as it is created moment by moment by people.

"Floating in the Falling Universe of Flowers"
teamLab, 2016-2018, Interactive Digital Installation, Endless, Sound: Hideaki Takahashi

In "Floating in the Falling Universe of Flowers," a year's worth of flowers blooms and changes with the passing of time, creating a universe of life. Lie down or sit for a while, and your body will begin to float, becoming one with the world. People can select and throw butterflies on their smartphones, which then flutter into the universe of life.

This work is continuously rendered in real time by a computer program; it is not a pre-recorded video. Flowers are born, grow, bud, and bloom before their petals begin to wither and die. The flower is in a continuous cycle of birth and death, repeating forever, and the space at that moment can never be seen again. "Drawing on the Water Surface Created by the Dance of Koi and People - Infinity"
teamLab, 2016-2018, Interactive Digital Installation, Endless, Sound: Hideaki Takahashi

In "Drawing on the Water Surface Created by the Dance of Koi and People - Infinity," koi swim on an infinitely expanding water surface. As people enter and walk through the water, the koi are influenced by the presence of people in the water, and their swimming is influenced by the other koi. When the koi bump into people, they turn into flowers and scatter, and a line is drawn in their path as they swim, influenced by the presence of people.

This work is also rendered in real time by a computer program; it is not a pre-recorded image that is played back. The interaction between the viewer and the work causes continuous change; previous states can never be replicated, and the same picture never appears twice. "Expanding Three-dimensional Existence in Transforming Space - Free Floating, 12 Colors"
teamLab, 2018, Interactive Installation, Endless, Sound: Hideaki Takahashi

The space of "Expanding Three-dimensional Existence in Transforming Space - Free Floating, 12 Colors" is filled with freely floating spheres of light, and people push their way through them to enter the space. When people push through or hit the spheres, they change color and emit a tone specific to that color. The surrounding spheres respond continuously in three dimensions to the nearby spheres, taking on the same color and emitting the same tone.

As the colors change, the space alternates between a three-dimensional object created by the collection of spheres and a flat surface of color. Each sphere moves freely, and no matter where it is located, the behavior of light throughout the space (a three-dimensional visual expression in which each sphere is considered to be one dot) is maintained. Therefore, the light behaving as a group can be thought of as a single three-dimensional entity. In this case, the light spreads spherically from the impacted sphere at its center. Because the physical positions of the spheres, which are the components of this three-dimensional entity, are free, people perceive them as three-dimensional entities and push aside them to enter them. The shape of the space created by the collection of floating spheres changes as people push and bump into each other. The shape of the space is also altered by the wind and changes in air pressure caused by fans above.

In pre-modern Japan, complex colors were given seasonal names, such as "kasane no irome" (layered colors), which are combinations of front and back colors (silk at the time was so thin that the lining was visible, resulting in complex colors), gradations of overlapping colors, and combinations of warp and weft threads in weaving. The spheres change into 12 colors, including 9 new colors (light in water, sunlight filtering through water plants, sunrise, morning sky, sky at twilight, peach, plum, iris, and spring maple), as well as blue, red, and green. "Waterfall of Light Particles at the Top of an Incline"
teamLab, 2018, Digital Installation

"Waterfall of Light Particles at the Top of an Incline" is based on "Waterfall of Light - Deep in the Mountains of Shikoku" (2016-2017), a work that used a natural waterfall deep in the mountains of Shikoku. By shining light only on the waterfall (water particles), glowing particles flow down, creating a waterfall of light particles. The light from this glowing waterfall then illuminates the surrounding area. In the darkness, the glowing particles leave behind a trail of light due to an afterimage effect, drawing lines in space. The collection of these light trails creates the waterfall of light.

"Cold Life"
teamLab, 2014, Digital Work, 7 min 15 sec. (loop), Calligraphy: Sisyu

"Cold Life" peels away the surface of "Life Survives by the Power of Life" (2011), revealing its structure. In computer-generated work, the shape of a three-dimensional object is expressed as abstract, high-level information described by a mesh-like structure. Peeling away the surface of a three-dimensional object reveals that it is made up of a collection of mesh-like lines. It is expressed in its peeled-away state, that is, as abstract, high-level information described by a structure.

Since the group's founding, teamLab has been working on Spatial Calligraphy. The spatial calligraphy, which recreates the depth, speed and power of traditional calligraphy brushstrokes in a new way, is reconstructed in three dimensions in space, and butterflies, birds, flowers and other plants and animals dwell within, expressing the changing seasons and the activities of life. In Zen, the saying goes, "All living things, mountains, rivers, plants and trees attain Buddhahood (Buddha nature dwells in all living things)," and it is believed that the Buddha is the natural, unadulterated state of things. This work embodies the spirit of life as we, living in the modern age, conceive it.

"Soft Black Hole - Your Body Becomes a Space that Influences Another Body"
teamLab, 2016-2018, Sound: Hideaki Takahashi

In "Soft Black Hole - Your Body Becomes a Space that Influences Another Body," your feet sink when you try to walk, and the space itself is affected and changes under the weight of people's bodies. People's bodies are then affected by the changing space, and people influence each other through space. Your body changes the space, and that space changes the bodies of others. In modern urban life, surrounded by hard, flat surfaces, we can go about our daily lives without thinking about our bodies, and so we have forgotten what it means to be human. However, in a natural forest, flat surfaces do not exist. This exhibition makes us keenly aware of our bodies, which we usually forget, and reminds us that we are a mass of bodies.
