"Sound Architecture Exhibition" by Keigo Oyamada, Masamichi Katayama and others opens in Roppongi

Jun 29, 2018
The "AUDIO ARCHITECTURE: Architecture of Sound" exhibition will be held at 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT Galleries 1 & 2 from June 29th to October 14th. A press preview was held on June 28th ahead of the opening.

Musician Keigo Oyamada (Cornelius) wrote a new song, "AUDIO ARCHITECTURE," specifically for this exhibition. A group of cutting-edge artists have interpreted the song from their own perspectives to create a video work. The exhibition, which combines the video work with a dynamic space designed by Masamichi Katayama of Wonderwall, allows visitors to discover fresh perspectives on music. The exhibition, designed by Masamichi Katayama, is divided into three spaces: Gallery 1, Gallery 2, and the artist booths behind them. In Gallery 1, a studio live performance by Cornelius, filmed by Tetsuro Inagaki, is projected onto three walls immediately upon entering. While Gallery 2 features digital works, the projected footage visually conveys the recording process and instruments, including guitars, drums, and keyboards. Gallery 2, the next space, is dedicated to eight artists: Hiroaki Umeda, Keita Onishi, Ryo Orikasa, Koichiro Tsujikawa (GLASSLOFT) x Bascule x Kitasenju Design, Kazumasa Teshigawara, Yoriko Mizushiri, UCNV, and Euphrates (Masaya Ishikawa) + Shun Abe. Behind the gallery are eight booths, each showcasing the artist's work. Keita Onishi translated each of the sound elements that make up a song into individual motion graphics elements, then reconstructed the entirety into a single space. Ryo Orikasa presented a work themed around endgame studies. Hiroaki Umeda, who creates choreography and dance pieces, depicted the motif of muscle fiber structure through moving light images. Kazumasa Teshigahara viewed music as a pulsating living thing, and by depicting a series of cross sections, expressed the complexity inherent in the act of listening to music. UCNV also juxtaposed normal and corrupted versions of video footage one above the other. Yoshiko Mizushiri arranged several familiar objects, such as sushi, tissues, and balloons, to express a sensory discrepancy. Euphrates (Masaya Ishikawa) + Shun Abe created visual effects by layering and moving two transparent films with patterns. Koichiro Tsujikawa (GLASSLOFT) x Bascule x Kitasenju Design presented a work that unites music, video, and viewer, incorporating the listener into the structure of a music video. Oyamada greeted the audience by saying, "This time, Nakamura Yugo wrote the lyrics, and we were able to collaborate on music, making it a fun experience like being in a band." Taku Sato, director of 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT, added, "This time, we tried asking Nakamura Yugo to be the exhibition director, and it turned out even better than we expected. It's an unprecedented exhibition that expresses music architecturally." Nakamura added, "The theme for this exhibition has two meanings: the constructive nature of music, and the comprehensive design of architecture as an environment centered around a single piece of music. I hope that visitors will not only encounter each piece individually, but also experience the space as a whole."
