MONKI, a brand under the H&M Group, which opened its first Japanese store in Namba, Osaka, on June 1st, has announced that it will open its second store in September in a new commercial facility currently under construction on Takeshita Street in Harajuku, Tokyo. The store will carry women's items only. A Tokyo-exclusive collection is also planned for release and sale. Like the Osaka store, the store design will have a "Sea of Scallops" theme. The Tokyo store will have a different two-floor layout, and original designs are being planned. According to Catharina Frankander, the brand's architectural director, the store will feature a MONKI ping-pong game table, a MONKI story box, a carousel, and a jellyfish chandelier. MONKI was launched as an H&M subsidiary in 2006. Currently, the store operates over 60 stores in seven European countries, and opened stores in China and Hong Kong last year. In Japan, on June 1st, the building that housed the H&M Kaibashi 2nd store in Kaibashi, Namba, Osaka was renovated to open a joint store with the group's affiliated brand, WEEK DAY, marking its first store in Asia.
