Miu Miu's short film project, "Women's Stories," launched in 2011, has been shot by internationally acclaimed female film directors, who use their unique female sensibility to vividly depict worlds that are sometimes beautiful, sometimes mysterious, and sometimes fantastical.

The 23 short films produced so far each depict a different cinematic world, but what they all have in common is that they question timeless themes. How do women see themselves? How do women see each other? Hasn't appearance always been a reflection of women's thoughts and intellect, inseparable from sensuality and pleasure? In other words, what should a woman be? "Women's Story" was born from a request to female directors to create a film that would offer a sharp celebration of 21st-century femininity. That is, a film that appeals to women's sensibilities, offers an opportunity for self-reflection, and embraces complexity and contradictions in the old and the new. In "Women's Story," not only do the actresses and models play a key role, but the Miu Miu collection plays a crucial role throughout the film. Miu Miu clothing drives the story, sometimes emphasizing it and sometimes presenting conflict. Power and desire, vanity and decoration, ritual and rules, dreams and nightmares. Every moment of a woman's daily life contains many different elements. "Women's Story" captures these moments and lets the clothes speak for themselves.

Previous films have been screened as part of the Venice Days programme and at New York Fashion Week. Carla Simone's latest film, "Carta a mi madre para mi hijo," premiered on September 3, 2022, at the Venice Days section of the Venice Film Festival, Giornate degli Autori. All previously released films, along with exclusive interviews and behind-the-scenes footage, are available to view on the Miu Miu website. The film will also be available on the online streaming service MUBI from September 5, 2022.

■ Synopsis

Directed by Carla Simon, A Letter to a Mother for Her Son is the 24th installment in the Miu Miu Women's Stories series. It features actress Ángela Molina, who has worked with directors such as Luis Bunuel, Pedro Almodóvar, Bigas Luna and Ridley Scott; Cecilia Gómez, whose works include Domingo, The Plague and Down There; and Ainette Jounou, who has appeared in Alcarrés and Paula Ortiz's upcoming Teresa. In this short film series, talented international female directors explore vanity and femininity in the 21st century.

Carla Simon's parents died of AIDS when she was just six years old, and she has few memories of them. "With Miu Miu Women's Stories, I wanted to give my son something I never had: my family history." For Simon, film plays a special role inside people. "Film has the power to fill in what's missing." Speaking of Women's Stories as a platform for female filmmaking, Simon says, "It's so important to question things on set with your team during the creative process. I think it's very meaningful, not just for women but for men, that female directors are starting to do this."

Fragmented and elusive, Carta a mi madre para mi hijo is a homage to the director's family, part fiction, and a work of deep affection throughout. "I'm an optimistic person," says Simon, and his new film is full of gentle hope in the midst of loss—a moving reminder that understanding who we are is a lifelong process of piecing together real and imagined memories of the past and charting our future.
