"Movie Sounds!" is a feature introducing recommended movie soundtracks to FASHION HEADLINE readers. Our fourth installment focuses on the film "Call Me by Your Name," which opens on April 27th.

During the summer of 1983, 17-year-old Elio (Timothée Chalamet) was bored at a summer resort in northern Italy. His father (Michael Stuhlbarg), a university professor, was busy with research, while his mother (Amira Casar) was having dinner with friends almost every day. Elio's daily activities included reading books, listening to music on his Walkman, playing the piano, and swimming in the pool. Oliver (Armie Hammer), an American graduate student, arrives to live with the family as Elio's father's assistant. Elio initially dislikes Oliver, but before he knows it, his eyes are following him... This film depicts the summer first love of a 17-year-old boy. Set in 1983, the film evokes the atmosphere of the time with 80s synth pop, including Joe Esposito's "Lady, Lady, Lady" from "Flashdance," The Psychedelic Furs' "Mystery of Love" from "Valley Girl," the European hit band Rodeo's "Paris Latino," and F.R. David's "Words." Classical music performed by Elio, who is busy composing on piano and guitar, also adds color to the beautiful Italian summer scenery. At director Luca Guadagnino's request, American singer-songwriter Sufjan Stevens contributed his first original music to the film. The director praised him, saying, "I think Sufjan's songs add another voice to the film. His songs are like a narration for a film without narration." One of his songs, "Mystery of Love," was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song, and he performed it at the awards ceremony alongside St. Vincent, Moses Sumney, and Chris Thile. Sufjan Stevens, who normally doesn't dress formally, wore Gucci for his introduction. His striped tuxedo jacket from the 2018 Cruise Collection featured striking dragon embroidery. The pink and navy combination recalled the striped sleeveless T-shirt Elio wore in the film. This punk-like color combination was unexpected amidst the prevalence of "smart" fashion like Lacoste polo shirts and Ralph Lauren shirts. Of course, swim trunks are the perfect way to dress up in the hot summer! You'll have so many different shorts that you'll wonder how many colors you have.

This is a film that will have you looking forward to summer, both visually and aurally. It opens in Japan on April 27th at TOHO Cinemas Chanter and other theaters nationwide. Until then, listen to this soundtrack to get yourself in the mood.
