Jimbocho Book Center with Iwanami Books, a new complex combining a bookstore, workspace, and coffee shop, opens in the city

Mar 26, 2018
Jimbocho Book Center with Iwanami Books, a complex consisting of a bookstore, co-working space, and cafe, will open in April on the site of the former Iwanami Book Center in Jimbocho, Tokyo.

The former Iwanami Book Center Shinzansha was a landmark in Jimbocho, known as a town of books, and was long a beloved bookstore with a wide selection of specialist books in the humanities and social sciences, with a focus on books published by Iwanami Shoten. The facility, which will open on the site of the store that sadly closed in 2016, is based on the concept of "sowing the seeds of your future self." This facility combines a "book cafe" where anyone visiting Jimbocho can stop by to read, purchase, and enjoy coffee and a meal, as well as a "workplace" where people can work surrounded by books and meet new people and learn new things through various themed events.

The "book cafe" on the first floor stocks Iwanami Shoten's major publications currently on sale. During the day, it operates as a cafe where you can read and buy books, and in the evening, it becomes a place where you can relax and enjoy a drink surrounded by books. The "workplace" also offers a work lounge where you can concentrate on work surrounded by books, as well as coworking spaces such as conference rooms and service offices. The work lounge regularly hosts events related to Iwanami Shoten books, as well as talk events featuring invited authors, workshops, schools (series lectures), and reading groups.

With book coordinator Uchinuma Shintaro, representative of NUMABOOKS and co-owner of Shimokitazawa's B&B Bookstore, as an advisor, the event aims to encourage encounters with new knowledge and discoveries, as well as encounters with new friends, and to provide opportunities for personal growth and awareness needed to survive in the coming era.

In this era when "continuous learning" to survive in society and "friends and communities" for learning and working are becoming increasingly important as society and values change with population decline, an aging population, and the arrival of the AI era, it looks set to become a "hub for interaction between books and people" where people can gather around books and encounter new knowledge and friends to help them survive in the future.
