The "YUIMA NAKAZATO EXHIBITION - HARMONIZE," a collaboration between Yuima Nakazato and Toray Industries, has opened at Gallery 3 at 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT in Roppongi, Tokyo. The exhibition showcases Yuima Nakazato's 2018 Spring/Summer collection, which was unveiled at the Paris Haute Couture Collection in January, as well as the designer's innovative clothing production system, and new products made using Toray's latest eco-friendly artificial leather, Ultrasuede® PX. The exhibition runs until February 25th.
This exhibition showcases Yuima Nakazato's vision of the future of fashion, developed using a method of combining parts called "units" to create garments without sewing. These units allow for the designer to freely change the design, size, and material, allowing for a harmonious fit for every wearer. The exhibition will feature 10 of the 11 pieces from the brand's Spring/Summer 2018 collection, as well as one representative piece each from the brand's three seasons, Fall/Winter 2016-17, Spring/Summer 2017, and Fall/Winter 2017-18, the first seasons in which the brand presented its collections in Paris. The exhibition showcases the brand's vision of the future, in which "in the future, only one-of-a-kind garments will exist," and the way clothing is made using "units." The space-focused 2018 Spring/Summer collection uses Ultrasuede PX as its base material. This sustainable, plant-based material is easy to cut, uniform, stable, and commercially viable. The collection is also made by collecting discarded parachutes and airbags from around the world, dismantling them, and reassembling them using cutting-edge technology and craftsmanship. Also on display are two rider jackets made by the "Unit" project, released in February, and how they can be customized; the Ultrasuede PX material and its options; and 3D scanners, computers, and laser cutters, all of which provide a clearer understanding of the brand's production system and philosophy. During the talk session, Nakazato Yuima said, "It's not a one-way street. By constantly rearranging clothes, they can be worn for a longer period of time, and by eliminating sewing, production will no longer be shipped to low-cost countries. It's fun to think about the future. I believe this exhibition will be the start of a new platform."
