Comme des Garçons Homme Plus and the Bold Collision of White [Men's Fall/Winter 2018-19]

May 12, 2018

Rei Kawakubo's COMME des GARÇONS HOMME PLUS held its Fall/Winter 2018-19 collection show on the stage of the Théâtre du Châtelet, which is currently under construction. The collection was titled "White Shock." Instead of black, which is typically used to express punk, Kawakubo chose white for this collection, explaining that "the unusualness brings excitement." Blousons and jackets frequently feature fabrics sandwiched between polyurethane layers, creating a patchwork of finely cut pieces with exposed seams. Motifs range from architectural tiles and pebbled concrete to aerial photographs, American comics, camouflage, and cut-up lettering, creating an impression of a cold, inorganic arrangement of unrelated objects. With a few exceptions, the jackets and blousons were asymmetrical, resulting in many pieces with angled hems.

For bottoms, baggy shorts and rounded quilted satin pants were coordinated. They created a soft and gentle atmosphere, and created a variety of contrasts, such as the contrast with the inorganic prints and the hardness and softness of the materials. The dinosaur bone masks by artist Shimoda Masakatsu, which were worn by the models at the beginning and end of the show, also added strength to the contrast.
