Junya Watanabe's COMME des GARÇONS JUNYA WATANABE MAN presented its Fall/Winter 2018-19 collection in a parking lot under an overpass in Paris's 15th arrondissement. Titled "Functional Decoration," the collection showcased a mix of streetwear, workwear, and tailored pieces, showcasing clothing with a focus on functional decoration. The show opened with simple silhouettes, including firefighter jackets, duffle coats, and checked blousons, all adorned with wide reflective tape—a functional element. Reflective elements were used extensively throughout the collection, appearing on the hems of jackets, bags, and pants. This season also saw numerous collaborations, including a new one with Canada Goose. Other brands that remained focused on workwear, including The North Face, Carhartt, and Levi's®, continued to collaborate, but they didn't stop there. They collaborated with Karrimor to create a jacket made from a disassembled backpack, and with The North Face, they created a foldable jacket with a drawstring. The highlight of the second half of the show was the model's quick transformation. While it wasn't particularly surprising when she slipped behind a screen midway down the runway and emerged wearing a reversible jacket inside out, it was revealed that the bag she was holding was actually a jacket, and various variations were released, exciting the audience. This demonstrated one way to subtly yet impressively combine tailoring with workwear.
