From the Hara Museum Collection, which comprises approximately 1,000 works including paintings, sculptures, photographs, videos, and installations dating back to the 1950s and which have been painstakingly collected one by one, this exhibition will be curated for the first time by director Toshio Hara. The first half of the exhibition will run from January 6 to March 11, 2018, focusing on works acquired early in the collection from the late 1970s to early 1980s. The second half will run from March 21 to June 3, focusing on works acquired as a result of special exhibitions and other events, providing a glimpse into the Hara Museum's activities over the past 40 years.

The first half of the exhibition will feature works by American artists and abstract expressionists such as Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko, who had a major influence on postwar painting, as well as Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns, who represent their successor generation, and Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, leaders of the pop art movement that swept the world.

European artists with an avant-garde and experimental spirit will also be featured, including painters such as Jean Dubuffet and Karel Appel, and sculptors such as Arman, César, and Jean Tinguely. The exhibition will bring together works by Japanese artists who have led the way in postwar Japanese art, including Imai Toshimitsu, Kawara On, Kudo Tetsumi, and Miyawaki Aiko, as well as works by still-active artists such as Kusama Yayoi, Shinohara Ushio, Sugimoto Hiroshi, and Lee Ufan, as well as Asian artists who have influenced the world, such as Nam June Paik and Ai Weiwei.
