On June 10th, Hugo Boss appointed Jason Wu as creative director of its women's line. Founded in 1923 as a manufacturer of workwear and military uniforms, the brand has since established itself as a menswear brand, particularly in suits. While the men's line is well-known and performing well, the women's line, launched in 1998, has been known for its high-quality tailoring, but has often felt rather understated. The appointment of Wu, whose clientele includes Michelle Obama and many other celebrities, aims to revamp the women's line's image and establish it as a luxury brand. It also appears to be aimed at appealing to the US and Asian markets. A longtime fan of Hugo Boss's tradition and tailoring, Wu commented, "I want to create a collection that is both powerful and feminine, comparable to the brand's menswear." His collection will begin in Pre-Fall 2014 and is scheduled to go on sale in September. A large store boasting a sales floor area of 800 square meters opened in Amsterdam this year, and the women's floor has been expanded in the New York store. His first runway show is also scheduled for New York Fashion Week in February next year.
