21_21 DESIGN SIGHT, an exhibition facility within Tokyo Midtown, will be holding a special exhibition, "Photo City: William Klein and Photographers Living in the 22nd Century," from February 23rd to June 10th, 2018, directed by photography critic and art historian Shunji Ito, known for his numerous books and exhibition curations.

William Klein "Self portrait, Paris 1995 (Painted 1995)"
The theme is William Klein, one of the most representative photographers of the 20th century. William Klein is a superstar whose work transcends the genres of photography, film, design, and fashion, capturing cities around the world such as New York, Rome, Moscow, Tokyo, and Paris, leaving a profound impact on contemporary visual culture. This exhibition brings together a diverse range of his 20th-century photographs, including film, graphics, contact prints, photo books, and large-scale photographs, as well as a multi-projection project with video artist TAKCOM. Alongside William Klein's urban vision, this exhibition also introduces 11 Japanese and Asian photographers who look at 21st-century cities and people with innovative eyes, including Naoki Ishikawa, Kimihiko Katsumata, Akiyoshi Shen, Ayano Sudo, Yuki Tawada, Sohei Nishino, Mina Park, Satoshi Fujiwara, Takahiro Mizushima, Yasuhiro Morinaga, and Sachitane Yasuda. Through William Klein's photographs from the 1950s to the present, this exhibition boldly captures the hope and excitement of cities and explores the path of the energy of photographers who are transcending the boundaries of conventional photography in diverse ways.
