Designer Maiko Kurokawa's brand, mame, has opened a pop-up shop on the third floor of the Isetan Shinjuku store, featuring the brand's new fall/winter collection and bags. It will run until July 2nd. The central fixture in the shop displays the brand's signature PVC bag series. These bags have been highly acclaimed and have been exhibited at design fairs such as Design Tide Tokyo and the UK-Japan design exhibition "Marking" held in London in January. They are also part of the collection of the Kyoto Costume Foundation. "I found some PVC sheets at Tokyu Hands and thought, 'I could make a glass-like clear bag.'" Kurokawa explains the idea for the bags. In addition to the classic white, black, and clear bags, a pink color is available exclusively this fall/winter. There are three styles, priced from ¥42,000 to ¥57,750. The clutch bags are the most popular, and the clasp-style bags introduced last year are also popular. In addition, 10 unique accessory designs will be available for limited sale. Kurokawa's drawings are input into a CAM (automated cutting machine) as data, and PVC sheets are cut to form the pieces. Each piece is then laser-cut by artisans, and hand-sewn onto heat-treated acrylic pieces. Also available is a special capsule collection of 15 items, including dresses and blouses with pink collars, made exclusively for this occasion at Isetan. "We selected Mame-esque items from the Fall/Winter collection, featuring organic curves and embroidery. The designs complement the new pink bag color. While the design is simple to highlight the bag's subtle texture, we've paid particular attention to the silhouette, ensuring the neckline and hemline are beautifully contoured," says the designer. Inside the store, a selection of old books based on the themes of white, black, and pink is on display from Morioka Shoten, a secondhand bookstore in Kayabacho, Tokyo, where Kurokawa frequents her. The shop facade features a visual of a photograph taken at the foot of Mount Fuji filtered in pink.
