Sakanaction debuts Ichiro Yamaguchi's new silent song! "MEET@ART" held at Nakameguro Elevated Pavilion

Nov 1, 2017

MEET@ART, a space where people meet through art, was held on October 21st at PAVILION, a contemporary food and liquor store run by Smiles under the Nakameguro elevated railway, where Ichiro Yamaguchi of rock band Sakanaction debuted his new silent song "ANDON."

ANDON, the permanent exhibition unveiled this time, was created with a musical approach by Yamaguchi and the NF Team (a team that collaborates with creators from various fields to plan and manage content that blends music and various cultures, contributing to society and proposing better lifestyles). It consists of more than ten lantern-like objects that appear along the 50-meter corridor at the pavilion's entrance. When a train passes under the elevated tracks in Nakameguro, the device emits a vibrant light in response to the sound.

At the reception on the evening of the 20th, Yamaguchi will hold a discussion with Smiles representative Masamichi Toyama. Yamaguchi said of ANDON, "Until now, we have masked annoying or unpleasant sounds in our daily lives, such as the hum of a refrigerator, the noise made by neighbors, or the sound of a passing train, by erasing them or adding additional sounds. The idea is to change this way of thinking and visualize such sounds, so that something new can be born. When you visit the pavilion, you see the illuminated ANDON at the entrance before enjoying your meal inside. If you hear the sound of a train, you'll imagine, 'Oh, it's shining now!' Noise creates beautiful visuals. Something that gets in the way becomes something necessary." Other installations themed around encounters also graced the venue at the event. One installation by creative lab "LENS" attracted attention, in which videos were projected onto a parasol-shaped screen, and guests' faces were recognized and randomly appeared in the video. Another notable installation was a "one-night flower shop" by "FLOWERS NEST," which specializes in modern flower arrangements, and Smiles. The dress code for the event required guests to select a small glass jar containing a single flower from the flower cave-like space and wear it around their neck. Many attendees were seen enjoying the idea that meeting just one person in the venue with the same flower would bring about something special.

Although "MEET@ART" has ended at the pavilion, you can still enjoy food while viewing works by various artists, including "ANDON," Nawa Kohei, and Nishino Tatzu.
