FACETASM's Hiromichi Ochiai presents YUKATA, a traditional and streetwear collection [Ask the Designer]

Jun 30, 2013

Yukata, a collaboration with Tokyo designer brands under the direction of stylist Sota Yamaguchi, is now on sale at Isetan Shinjuku and textile manufacturer HINAYA KYOTO. Fashion Headline spoke with Hiromichi Ochiai, designer of FACETASM, who participated in the project, about the future of yukata. What Japanese dyeing and weaving techniques did you incorporate this time? Why did you choose them? We combined yukata fabric made using the traditional "Sekkashibori" dyeing technique from Arimatsu City, Aichi Prefecture, with polyester georgette fabric, featuring our specialty inkjet printing and pleating. We wanted to combine a new dyeing (printing) technique with a classic pattern. What's the biggest difference between designing Western clothing and yukata? They're both about taking on new challenges. However, while clothing can be completely creative, yukata and kimonos have established traditional shapes, so I wanted to keep them as close to those as possible.

--What challenges did you face when actually making the yukata, and were there any new discoveries you made?

There weren't any particular challenges. Since it was my first attempt, everything was new and I made a series of discoveries.

--What traditional Japanese techniques would you like to incorporate into your designs in the future?

Various dyeing techniques and embroidery.

--What type of woman do you think best suits a yukata?

An actress in a Yasujiro Ozu film.

--What is your most memorable memory of going out in a yukata? Also, what are some recommended situations and spots?

I think just going out in a yukata is dramatic in itself.
