Jun 28, 2022

On June 19th at 9 PM JST, the Prada Men's Spring/Summer 2023 collection was unveiled on the runway in Milan. This collection embodies a curated process, focusing on the context of fashion as it is evoked through the combination of elements and garments, the formation of an impression, and the creation of a style.

The Spring/Summer 2023 Men's collection by Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons embodies a curated process. Here, fashion is associated with context, and is evoked through the combination of elements and garments, the formation of an impression, and the creation of a style. Fashion is a manner, a way of appearing, a means. It is an expression of choice. Design and fashion practice are a form of decision-making, simultaneously created and curated. The tools of this collection are straightforward, recognizable and archetypal: suits, coats, sweaters, shirts, denim and leather. Familiar garments are reborn in different contexts. Behind seemingly simple results there is always complex thought, a process of refinement into something purer in order to reveal the essence of the outfit. And even if the garment itself is classic, combining it in a different way can create a different impact. Inspiration is flexible and resilient. Leather shorts and plaid can simultaneously evoke childhood memories, home and sophistication. When these reference points meet, friction arises and different identities are formed.

Silhouettes are close to the body, with clean proportions. They evoke youthfulness and exude energy and vitality. There is a freshness and lightness in clothes that allow freedom of movement. There is an awareness of form and dynamism, an inherent freedom and joy. Stripping back leads to more streamlined designs. Unnecessary details are removed, shirts and coats have no collars. Trousers are tighter, cropped to the ankle or very short. The appearance of a succession of black tailored suits is the logical conclusion of this system of refinement towards purity. This deliberate reduction creates a sense of physical and mental relief - a sense of freshness and lightness.

The interior of the show venue is based on the concept of intimacy: a blown-up image of a model house, rendered entirely in raw paper. Humanity and reality, the mundane, are projected onto materials and images, and from both they create something extraordinary - another context that functions both as a backdrop for the clothes and as a subject in its own right, challenging our perceptions.
