Anthony Vaccarello's Saint Laurent presented his Summer 2018 collection on September 26th on a special stage set atop the Trocadero fountain, across the Seine from the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Cards bearing a message from Pierre Berge, co-founder of Saint Laurent, who passed away just before the opening of the Yves Saint Laurent Museum, were placed in the audience as a tribute.
The first half of the collection was unified with images of Marrakech, Morocco, home of Yves Saint Laurent's villa (which opened as a museum at the same time as the Paris collection). Loose tunics and cording evoked an ethnic feel. Items embroidered with red, purple, and yellow flowers in metallic braid, as well as jewelry, also echoed Marrakech, creating a glamorous and hedonistic impression.
The second half of the collection featured designs taken from Yves Saint Laurent's archives. Dresses adorned with voluminous ostrich boa and balloon-skirted dresses were all ultra-mini length and paired with show-stopping shorts. Some were made of lace and even had the Eiffel Tower embroidered on them. This season, the brand also featured a series of white wedding dresses, some inlaid with lace and others adorned with buckskin details, showcasing the elaborate details typical of a couture house. Popular accessories were also plentiful, as always. Cigarette cases, heart-shaped clasp bags, sandals and boots adorned with feathers—a standout feature in the collection—and shoes with multicolored rhinestones reminiscent of the 1980s—the list was endless, demonstrating the brand's rich selection.
