An exhibition that explores the uniquely Japanese worldview of "Ke" and beauty with Akira Minagawa, Kengo Kuma, Shinichiro Ogata, and Ikuko Harada.

Event Date:2017.11.17-12.24
Sep 23, 2017

From November 17th to December 24th, the Pola Museum Annex, a gallery in Tokyo's Ginza district, will host "The Beauty of Ke," an exhibition directed by graphic designer Taku Satoh that explores beauty in the everyday.

This exhibition, commemorating the 30th anniversary of the founding of ORBIS Inc., focuses on the "ke" in the traditional Japanese worldview of "hare" and "ke." Working with designers and creators active in various fields, including Kengo Kuma, Akira Minagawa, Shinichiro Ogata, and Ikuko Harada, the exhibition will explore and express the beauty found within "ke," which represents the ordinary, everyday. The venue will also feature a participatory exhibition, "Everyone's Ke," featuring photos submitted by members of the public that they consider to be "ke" based on the three themes of "breakfast," "places," and "kanji." The 14 participating creators are Yukiko Ishimura, CEO and spatial coordinator of "Kurumi no Ki," Shinichiro Ogata, CEO and designer of "SIMPLICITY," author Ito Ogawa, architect Kengo Kuma, broadcast writer and scriptwriter Kundo Koyama, illustrator Izumi Shiokawa, product designer Fumie Shibata, Souyu Sen, heir to the Mushakoji Senke school of schooling, cooking researcher Yoshiharu Doi, musician Ikuko Harada of "Clammbon," Tomi Matsuba, CEO and designer of "Gungendo," Akira Minagawa, CEO and designer of minä perhonen, rakugo performer Karoku Yanagiya, and handicraft artist Kaoru Yokoo.

Exhibition director Taku Sato commented, "While 'hare' refers to celebrations and special events, such as wearing formal attire, 'ke' refers to the everyday, everyday things we do. In modern society, glamorous 'hare' tend to attract attention, but these glamorous 'hare' are only felt to be special and precious when accompanied by the fulfillment of 'ke', which may even seem boring at first glance."
