Simone Rocha's pure and innocent beauty brings back childhood [2018 Spring/Summer Women's Collection]

Sep 20, 2017

On September 16th, Simone Rocha presented her Spring/Summer 2018 collection. Each season, she chooses three words to describe her collection, and this season's theme was innocence, playfulness, and innocence. The models who walked the runway had youthful faces, their porcelain skin and softly flushed cheeks giving them the appearance of innocent young girls. The designer explained that this season's inspiration came from a porcelain china doll wearing a Victorian dress that she had as a child. "One day, I was playing with it and it cracked its face. I kept it, and now my daughter is 18 months old and it's playing with it again." The opening show featured a series of pure white looks. Silk, tulle, and lace materials, inflated like balloons or swaying with ruffles and puffs, were unmistakably pure. The looks shifted to black midway through the show. Floral patterns, embroidered and beaded, added to the romantic mood. Towards the end, the show regained its brightness, returning to pure white. The silhouettes varied widely, with shellmeuse fabrics creating a sense of weight and bias cuts adding movement and softness. There was also a bountiful selection of bags and shoes, making for a show that had me constantly distracted from start to finish. The clothes passing before my eyes were so unconditionally beautiful, I found myself excited and thrilled, reverting to my childhood. I felt there was no need to think logically about why something was beautiful, and I simply enjoyed the moment as I was drawn to it. After the show, it was clear to me that Simone Rocha is a rare designer who creates beautiful collections that tug at the heartstrings of our hearts.
