Lamarck and Fontana's Four-Dimensional World: Their Roots [Women's Spring/Summer 2018]

Sep 8, 2017

LAMARCK, designed by Shinsuke Morishita, presented its 2018 Spring/Summer collection on September 6th in Ebisu, Tokyo. The theme was "SPAZIALISMO." Following the show, the designer began accepting pre-orders for the collection on the fashion e-commerce site "@SeeNowTokyo," which launched the same day.

This season's LAMARCK collection incorporates the ideas of Lucio Fontana's Spatialism, such as blending space and time and breaking down artistic boundaries, while also exploring the designer's own roots. To showcase the texture of the materials, approximately 30 chairs were placed about one meter apart facing the wall. The collection kicked off with a series of lustrous white pieces, including tops and skirts featuring pleats and lace. While maintaining a light, spring/summer feel, the pieces also incorporated the depth and trendy 3D feel seen in Fontana's work. The use of string, a design seen in many brands this season, also served as an accent. The rayon aloha shirt features a print of Nagasaki windmills, mixing different styles of the New Look. Adding Japanese and couture classics to a tropical atmosphere expresses the idea of transcending time and space. The final jacquard piece, meanwhile, features feathers and fringes that represent flowers, birds, and nature found at the ruins of Takeda Castle in Hyogo, where Morishita's family lives. Morishita commented, "We've removed the barriers between shows and exhibitions, and, following in the footsteps of New York's See Now and Buy Now, we've made it possible to take pre-orders from the evening of the collection. By starting earlier, production has also gone more smoothly."
