The third installment of the "Photobook Symposium," a presentation-style event featuring publishers and guests discussing photobooks, will be held at VACANT in Harajuku, Tokyo. This year's event, titled "Photobook Symposium Vol. 3: Ryuichi Kaneko," will feature photography critic, photography historian, and photobook collector Ryuichi Kaneko as the main guest. Over the course of three days, he will hold talks and discussions with three guests about three photobooks. The September 9th event, "MAGNUM ANALOG RECOVERY - Magnum Past and Future," will focus on the catalog for "Magnum Analog Recovery," an archive exhibition held in Paris to commemorate the 70th anniversary of Magnum Photos, renowned as the world's leading collective of photographers. Junko Ogawa, director of Magnum Photos' Tokyo branch, will be invited to participate in a discussion with Kaneko, including comments from Moises Saman, a full member photographer.
On September 10th, the spotlight will be on Fukase Masahisa's masterpiece "RAVENS / Crow," which was reprinted this spring by the British publisher "MACK" for the first time in approximately 30 years, and Tomo Kosuga, director of the "Fukase Masahisa Archives," will give a presentation on the theme "RAVENS / Crow - The Secret of the Crow, the Mystery of the Archives." In addition, Kaneko and Fukase will exchange opinions about the appeal and mystery of their works. The venue will also feature a mini exhibition of prints never before shown in Japan, and all visitors will receive postcards of unreleased images.
The final session will be held on September 24th. The guest will be photographer Jin Tsukiji, who has been exploring the essence of photographic expression with his keen eye for over 50 years and who worked with Kaneko on the photo fanzine "CAMARA WORKS," and he will thoroughly discuss his views on "TOSHIBA," a project that Tsukiji undertook with American photographer Lewis Baltz in 1989. This rare book, which is not available on the general photo book market and has become a "myth," will be on display, and a slideshow of all its pages will be shown.
