Dutch photographer Viviane Sassen's exhibition "Of Mud and Lotus" will run from October 6th to November 25th at G/P Gallery in Ebisu, Tokyo. Inspired by the proverb "A lotus flower cannot bloom without mud," the exhibition features 21 works selected from her new series, "Of Mud and Lotus," shown for the first time in Japan. As symbolized by the proverb, the exhibition highlights all the richness inherent in the primal concept of femininity, expressing the "organic play" between these richnesses through the changes and fullness inherent in the female body during pregnancy and childbirth. Using Sassen's signature collages and hand-colored photographs, the exhibition's tense colors and textures skillfully interweave the concepts of abstraction and performance, further enhancing its multi-layered nature. Fungi and spores evoke bodily cells, while organic matter such as eggs, milk, and flowers represent the richness of the female body, emphasizing the smooth curves found in nature. What may at first appear to be abstract compositions emerge from Sassen's careful work, elevating them from their original forms and breathing new life into them. Vivienne Sassen was born in Amsterdam in 1972. After spending her childhood in South Africa, she studied fashion design and photography at the Utrecht School of the Arts and Atelier Arnhem. After graduating, she began her career as a fashion photographer. Her wide-ranging work includes fashion shoots for magazines such as Purple and Dazed & Confused, as well as campaigns for Miu Miu, Louis Vuitton, and Carven, and the cover of Shiseido's corporate culture magazine, Hanatsubaki. Vivienne Sassen will also be visiting Japan during the exhibition. A book signing will be held at Tsutaya Bookstore Ginza during her visit.
