"TOKYO ART BOOK FAIR 2017," a book festival specializing in art, will be held from October 5th to 8th at Warehouse Terrada in Tennozu Isle, Tokyo.
The event will feature approximately 350 exhibitors, including domestic and international publishers, bookstores, galleries, and artists. This year, the event will collaborate with galleries and shops in the area and plan to be the largest-ever event.
"Guest Country," a special project that focuses on one country or region each year and introduces publishing culture, will feature Asia, where the biggest shifts are occurring in the global art book scene. Key figures in the art book scenes of China, Korea, Taiwan, and Singapore will serve as curators, selecting books and zines based on three keywords that symbolize the current state of art publishing in each country, for exhibition and sale. Approximately 250 books and magazines designed by Tadanori Yokoo since 1960, including "Throw Away Your Books, Go Out into the Streets," "Escape to the Unfinished," "Shonen Magazine," and "Ryuko Tsushin," will be on display. Other merchandise, such as magazines featuring Yokoo's work and interviews, postcards, and more, will also be on display and for sale. The event will also feature back issues of Shiseido's corporate culture magazine, "Hanatsubaki," celebrating its 80th anniversary. Additionally, copies of the Winter 2017 issue of "Hanatsubaki," edited around the theme of "Art de Vivre," will be distributed. A commemorative talk event will also be held featuring longtime ADs Masayoshi Nakajo, Katsuhiko Shibuya, and Madoka Yamazaki. Furthermore, eight photobooks selected from the Steidl Book Award Asia, a dummy book award established in conjunction with the "1001 Steidl Books" exhibition held at DECK, a cultural facility specializing in photography in Singapore, will be available for purchase. A talk event featuring the award winners is also planned.
During the event, various exhibitions and events will be held at "NEIGHBOURS," a facility near Tennozu Isle, including "TERRADA ART COMPLEX," which houses six galleries: Kodama Gallery | Tennozu, Yamamoto Gendai, KOSAKU KANECHIKA, SCAI PARK, URANO, and Yuka Tsuruno Gallery; the new photography gallery "IMA gallery," the lifestyle shop "SLOW HOUSE," and the architectural model studio "Architecture Model Workshop." Food and drinks will be sold along the canal, and a lounge space will be set up for visitors to relax.
A preview opening reception will be held on the first day of the event. A limited number of tenugui hand towels, specially designed by artist Ken Kagami for the event, will be distributed to ticket purchasers on a first-come, first-served basis. Purchases can be made in advance on the official website (http://tokyoartbookfair.com/event) or at the venue on the day of the event.
