A computer-generated basketball court has appeared in the streets of Paris. This work is a collaboration between French fashion brand Pigalle and design agency ill studio, and was unveiled with support from Nike.
Pigalle, a fashion brand created by Stephane Ashpool, is currently collaborating with Nike on the Pigalle Basketball Collection, which is also garnering attention. ill studio was founded in 2007 by Thomas Subreville and Leonard Vernhet. They have previously collaborated with renowned brands such as Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Hermès, and Supreme, and have exhibited their work around the world.
This basketball court is actually their second collaboration, having been held in the same location two years ago in 2015. In stark contrast to the previous clean, linear design using red, blue, yellow, and white, the new design, which was redesigned and painted over, features a gradient from dark tones to vivid colors like pink, creating a completely different impression.
Through this project, Il Studio wanted to explore the relationship between sport, art, and culture, and their powerful presence as social and cultural indicators. Furthermore, they aimed to create a visualization of the past, present, and future of modernism, using their own interpretations of the aesthetics of basketball and other sports from the "avant-garde" era of the early 20th century, the "open source" era we live in today, and the future.
