Magazine writer Toru Kitahara, formerly deputy editor of POPEYE magazine and currently editor-in-chief of the independent fashion magazine PLEASE, is holding an exhibition of portraits of university researchers photographed by Kitahara at Tokyodo Bookstore in Jimbocho, Tokyo, from August 1st. In March 2016, he launched PLEASE, a magazine he edits, shoots, and directs himself. The inaugural issue featured a fashion story on COMME des GARÇONS HOMME PLUS and a feature exploring the fashion roots of Naoto Takenaka and Rila Fukushima. The magazine is currently in its sixth issue, and the latest issue features LOEWE on the cover, a shoot for COMME des GARÇONS, which he styles himself each time, as well as an essay on Arne.
In addition to being a magazineist, Kitahara also works as a photographer and produces magazine and apparel catalogs. Tokyodo Bookstore, founded in 1890, is currently holding a photo exhibition titled "Scholars," featuring portraits taken by photographer Toru Kitahara of associate professors from universities such as the University of Tokyo, Rikkyo University, and Hitotsubashi University.
Inspired by an editor who told him that portraits of researchers in Japan are often similar to so-called passport photos, Kitahara visited the laboratories where the researchers work to take his photographs, observing them in real-life situations and capturing their natural appearances. This exhibition features a total of 11 of these photographs.
