"MASTER OF CHRONOGRAPHS" exhibition unravels the history of Zenith chronographs at Daimaru Tokyo

Event Date:2022.06.15-06.28
Jun 9, 2022
Zenith will host the "MASTER OF CHRONOGRAPHS" pop-up in the event space on the first floor of the Daimaru Tokyo store from June 15th to 28th, 2022.

The MASTER OF CHRONOGRAPHS exhibition will feature the Chronomaster Open, the latest model that was unveiled at "WATCHES AND WONDERS GENEVA 2022" in Geneva, Switzerland in April and has been a hot topic of discussion. The latest Chronomaster Open model features a tri-color dial that allows visitors to see the heart of the watch, beating at high frequency.

"MASTER OF CHRONOGRAPHS" is a pop-up exhibition that celebrates Zenith's illustrious history and numerous achievements, having contributed to the development of mechanical chronographs for over 50 years. It highlights Zenith's commitment to constantly innovating watchmaking's most complex and sought-after complications. In 1969, Zenith introduced the groundbreaking El Primero caliber, the world's first high-frequency automatic chronograph movement. Since then, Zenith has continued to push the boundaries, achieving ever-higher levels of precision and performance while continuing its spirit of innovation. In addition to its exceptional automatic chronographs, Zenith has also introduced high-frequency calibers capable of measuring 1/10th and 1/100th of a second.

Zenith's legacy in the world of chronographs extends beyond performance and precision. Its cutting-edge movements are endowed with unique and evocative designs that highlight its creativity. In 2003, Zenith introduced the Chronomaster Open, offering an external view of the heart of the high-frequency El Primero caliber. This was the first chronograph in watchmaking history to feature a partially skeletonized dial, revealing the regulating mechanism and escapement. The Chronomaster Open's bold design quickly gained popularity. While many have imitated it, none have come close. Its partially skeletonized dial has remained a favorite among the Chronomaster collection's watches for 20 years.

In 2021, the iconic Chronomaster Open was updated with the introduction of the highly efficient El Primero 3600 movement, featuring a 1/10th of a second chronograph function. More than just an improvement, the new Chronomaster Open also incorporates the lines and characteristics unique to the latest generation of the Chronomaster collection. Combining the sporty sophistication of the Chronomaster Sport with the historic appeal of the original Chronomaster, this model redefines the essence of Zenith's legendary El Primero chronograph in a modern setting. The latest Chronomaster Open model inherits the instantly recognizable El Primero tri-color dial design of the iconic A386, launched in 1969, while showcasing the transparency of a skeletonized design. While previous models featured a cutout for the entire small seconds counter at 9 o'clock, the new model uses a transparent Hesalite element for the tri-color counter. This allows for unobstructed visibility of the subdials while revealing the star-shaped silicon escape wheel. Additionally, while the previous model featured a "frame" and a rounded, chamfered aperture, the aperture itself has been redesigned to reveal more rectilinear bridges and a contemporary gray-toned movement. The "MASTER OF CHRONOGRAPHS" exhibition will explore the history of Zenith chronographs while showcasing a number of Zenith's proud automatic chronograph watches.
