DIESEL BLACK GOLD, under the creative direction of Andreas Melbostad, unveiled its Spring/Summer 2018 collection in Milan on June 17th. Previously, women's collections were presented simultaneously as capsule collections, but this time, they were presented on this stage as a seasonal collection.
The women's collection features long and lean cuts, while the men's collection combines skater and grunge styles, reshaping the overall balance. Melbostad's mix of timeless elements combines the athletic functionality of "athleisure" with the exaggerated layering of "grunge," creating an urban, festival-like feel.
A striped cut-and-sew top and a checked patchwork maxi-length slip dress are worn over a dress with a cutwork front zip, highlighting the bodyline. The first look for the women's collection features '90s-inspired multi-layering. The women's silhouettes are slim and long, with added functionality, featuring a striped long T-shirt with narrow arms, a diagonal checked flannel maxi cardigan, and colorful stitching and drawstrings. Outdoor details are incorporated throughout, such as ripstop nylon and baggy pants with zippers and drawstrings at the cuffs. The men's collection features a subdued black and blue base, with mint accents creating a playful layering experience. Athleisure details are mixed functionally, with short-sleeved leather tops worn over hoodies, shirts, and sweatshirts, and nylon shorts worn over slim leather pants that cover the feet. Alternatively, leather shorts worn over leggings create a basic silhouette, adding volume to the top and accentuating the slim legs. Checked shirts and vests peek out from the jackets, but the flared length is calculated. The brand's stance is clear: chunky soles, combat boots, and hiking boots create a hard-edged look.
For women, the tops are inspired by surfing wetsuits with contrasting color stitching, and the shoes are lace-up sandals, creating a West Coast celebrity-inspired surfer look. The collection successfully harmonizes the brand's "rock chic" image for both men and women.
