A.F.VANDEVORST, a label created by An Vandervorst and Filip Arickx, presented their Fall/Winter 2017-18 collection at Espace Comines, an event space in the Marais district of Paris. This was their first show since being invited by the Syndicate of Haute Couture. Their couture aesthetic, enhanced by the beauty of handcrafted pieces, was met with rapturous applause for their signature irony and humor. Aside from visible couture pieces, such as tops embroidered with beads and crystals and dresses embroidered with hand-stitching, many pieces blurred the line between couture and ready-to-wear, creating a refreshing and different couture style. The collection as a whole was unified by a methodology that avoided conventional wearing of traditional pieces, instead creating a single look with a freewheeling approach. Military-inspired pieces, such as jackets adorned with military-inspired patches and braided Napoleon jackets, were coordinated with glitter boots and the house's signature latex tops for a modern look. Berets adorned with countless military insignia and badges, and headpieces adorned with doctor's bags, also exuded a vintage and retro vibe. What particularly caught our eye this time was the use of garbage bags as a material. They were fashioned into bag-like skirts or long tiered skirts. While different in style from other couture pieces, their fragility requires delicate handwork and meticulous care, which perhaps shares a common thread. While the coexistence of garbage bags and luxurious materials is unconventional in couture, the house's unique ingenuity and ingenuity brought them together, creating a unique match.
