During Paris Haute Couture, luxury jewelry brands with boutiques on Place Vendôme unveil new pieces one after another, offering jewelry to complement the dresses. This time, we'll focus on Chanel's high jewelry, a brand with a particularly large fanbase. The collection, unveiled just in time for the vacation season, was inspired by a luxury cruise ship owned by Hugh Grosvenor, 2nd Duke of Westminster, with whom Gabrielle Chanel was in a relationship in the 1920s. The collection's title, "Flying Cloud," is also the name of the cruise ship. Chanel's many tales are deeply woven into its creations, giving it a distinctive character unlike any other fashion house. Motifs include sailors' striped jersey and braid, tattoos on the body, embossed yellow gold buttons, the knit of espadrilles, and the lines of white beach pajamas and deck pants, all of which are linked to ships and the sea. The combination of the blue of the sapphires with diamonds and pearls is refreshing, while the gold, evoking the image of the sun, shines dazzlingly. All of the pieces possess simplicity and modernity, yet are also highly decorative, demonstrating the exquisite balance that is so characteristic of Chanel.
Unlike costume jewelry sold in fashion boutiques, the pieces are extremely expensive, costing over several million yen, making them more accessible. However, many of the pieces were sold during the exhibition, highlighting their high recognition and popularity.
