Isetan Shinjuku offers styling suggestions for vintage designer pieces and furniture by contemporary artists in one space

Event Date:2022.06.02-06.15
May 29, 2022

Isetan Shinjuku will be holding the "MODERN LIVING + CONTEMPORARY: Vintage and Contemporary Furniture for Everyday Spaces" exhibition by Objet d'art, a gallery in Komatsugawa, Edogawa Ward, Tokyo, at Isetan The Space on the second floor of the main building of Isetan Shinjuku from June 2nd to June 15th.

The event will feature a lineup of vintage furniture by Pierre Jeanneret, Charlotte Perriand, and more. Among these treasured pieces, we will add furniture pieces by contemporary artists such as Ben Storms and Thomas Cerruis, whose work is rooted in tradition and created using new techniques, to enrich everyday spaces, proposing a unique lifestyle from a unique perspective.

Concept

These masterpieces of modern design, characterized by timeless beauty and profound design expertise that have withstood the test of time over the decades, are enhanced by pairing them with contemporary furniture, creating a richer atmosphere in the space and revealing the potential of an aesthetic that harmonizes with modern sensibilities. This exhibition aims to reexamine vintage furniture and further revitalize the potential of vintage furniture by incorporating contemporary pieces by contemporary artists as accents in the same space, thereby redefining people's perceptions of both old and new furniture. We hope that the combination of new and old furniture in one space will spark an inspiring dialogue between the objects and their owners.

Contemporary & Vintage mix style

Vintage designer pieces stand out even more when combined with contemporary designer pieces, creating a deeper flavor in the space.

Ex Hale Wallpiece – combination /Contemporary / Ben Storms

A designer and craftsman from Belgium who uses cutting-edge technology to transform materials into unexpected and fascinating forms. While honing his skills as a stonemason, sculptor and woodworker, he is constantly expanding his imagination with materials. Based on the concept of "creating near-impossible forms that confuse the viewer, temporarily throwing their visual balance off and stimulating them to look at familiar materials with fresh eyes," he combines traditional techniques with cutting-edge technology to create sculptural and unique art in the form of furniture.

SPC Chair Galva /Contemporary / Thomas Serruys

A self-taught artist with a background in 20th-century design and art. Driven by an interest in crafts and creation, he pursued a variety of approaches, eventually establishing his own atelier in 2016. With a career as a vintage furniture gallerist (art dealer), they create works that pursue excellent design aesthetics, functionality, and materials. Their signature piece, a galvanized steel chair, is designed for outdoor use and is maintenance-free, featuring works that focus on the beauty of metal that changes over time.

Room Divider / Contemporary / x + l

A duo design unit based in Amsterdam, Netherlands, consisting of Xander Vervoort and Leon van Boxtel. With a background in stage and cinematographic art, he founded x + 1 Studio in 1996, focusing on interior design.
Over the years, he has worked in a variety of fields, including photography, advertising, stage design, fashion, and exhibition design. In addition to these commissioned projects, he creates one-of-a-kind and small-batch handmade objects. He works closely with artisan friends, constantly exploring what makes x + 1 unique.
Irregularity is a defining feature of his work, and by using designs and techniques that can only be produced by hand, he aims to create an environment in which these imperfections can be embraced as beauty by everyone.

Lacquered Bamboo Club Chair / Contemporary / GREEN RIVER PROJECT LCC

GREEN RIVER PROJECT LLC> A design studio founded in New York, USA in 2017 by AARON AUJLA and BENJAMIN BLOOMSTEIN. Aaron Aujla has a background in the studio of New York-based painter Nate Lowman, while Benjamin Bloomstein has experience working as an art handler at the Los Angeles art gallery Maccarone Gallery, where he stored, moved, and installed artworks. The pieces they create are characterized by free-spirited, artistic designs that go beyond the realm of furniture. Most are handmade, with embroidery and painting varying from piece to piece. They release their unique and fashionable pieces in collections several times a year.
