A good drinking party is always accompanied by delicious food and lively stories. There is a theory that in Japan, the custom of enjoying alcohol on a daily basis as a communication tool began in the Edo period. And one rakugo performance that has been passed down to the present day begins with this story.
"Yoriaizake" (A Gathering of Drinks)
A group of young men from a neighborhood get together for a drinking party, but they are penniless. So, everyone puts their money together and purchases a dish to go with the drinks from someone they know in the neighborhood. On Saturday, July 29th, we will be hosting the 10th annual "Shirokane Kitasato Street Shopping District Evening of Food and Rakugo," featuring rakugo performer Irifunetei Yukyo, at OUR FAVOURITE SHOP (OFS), KIGI's gallery-cum-shop in Shirokane. Kitasato Street, which stretches straight from Shirokane-Takanawa Station toward the Ebisu 2-Chome intersection, is a lesser-known but friendly shopping street lined with traditional shops, liquor stores, and barbers, offering a slightly different vibe from the "Platinum Street" famed for its "celebrity" side. This street is packed with delicious, renowned restaurants recommended by KIGI and OFS, so much so that you could go bar-hopping every 10 steps. The pleasant smoke from the yakitori restaurant on this street, the beautifully written menu at the tofu shop, and the walls of the long-established teppanyaki restaurant are all signs of a delicious, famous restaurant.

The "Shirokane Kitasato Street Shopping District Evening of Food and Rakugo" we have planned this time will be an event where you can savor Shirokane's "gathering sake" through food and rakugo, with a feast of delicacies and drinks brought by each of the delicious restaurants around OFS, as well as original rakugo stories specially prepared by Irifunetei Yukyo in honor of the town and a dish from each of the restaurants. Yukyo is also scheduled to perform rakugo in addition to the "gathering sake" story (the stories will be revealed on the day).

◇Irifunetei Yukyo Profile
A rakugo performer from Matsuyama City, Ehime Prefecture. He became an apprentice to Irifunetei Senyu in October 2010, and in December, Irifunetei Senbashi gave him the name "Yukyo." In May of the following year, he became a zenza (early performer) and changed his name to "Yukyo," performing his debut piece, "Jugemu," at the Suzumoto Engei Hall. On November 1, 2015, he was promoted to ni-tsume (second-class performer) and changed his name to "Yukyo." He currently performs rakugo and vaudeville shows monthly, mainly in Tokyo.
