Mayumi Shimoda's fantasy acrylic painting world is now on display at Shinjuku Isetan

Jul 1, 2014

Illustrator and artist Mayumi Shimoda is hosting "Mayumi Shimoda x ISETAN" at Isetan Shinjuku, showcasing her acrylic paintings and miscellaneous goods printed with them, in the art gallery space on the second floor of the main building. The exhibition runs until July 15th. The works on display are a combination of colorful acrylic "paintings" and single-stroke "drawings." The walls are lined with approximately 40 paintings of buildings and animals (prices start at ¥18,500). Each piece features a diverse color palette, and the contours and curves on the canvas create fantastical scenes. The paints also contain pearlescent pigments, creating a glow on the canvas, seemingly transporting the viewer into a magical dream world. Other items on sale include T-shirts (¥3,000), tote bags (¥1,800), a set of 12 postcards (¥2,000 with case), and badges (¥720), as well as approximately 20 handmade ribbon brooches (¥1,600) called "rosettes," a word originally used to describe roses. "The buildings I draw aren't bound by actual architecture. I draw them in a fantastical way, expanding on my imagination and with a focus on elegance," Shimoda said. "I also incorporate feelings that are difficult to express in words into my work, like, 'I wish there was a castle this beautiful.' I'd like to collaborate with cosmetics and fashion brands and design their packaging in the future." In 2006, while still a student at art school, Shimoda won the MTV JAPAN Scout Award at GEISAI #10 (an event produced by Takashi Murakami), garnering significant attention. After graduating from university, he collaborated with Adidas Silver on T-shirts and participated in exhibitions in Asia, including Taiwan and Korea. He currently has a serial cover illustration for the monthly music magazine Music Magazine.
