A new restaurant where you can enjoy Japanese tea will open in Ochanomizu on August 1st

Jul 12, 2014

Ryumeikan, a hotel and restaurant operator, will open Green Tea Restaurant 1899 Ochanomizu on August 1st in Ochanomizu (3-4 Kanda Surugadai, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo), a restaurant based on the concept of "brewing" and "eating" Japanese tea.

The restaurant has a relaxing atmosphere with a wood-grain theme, with 48 indoor seats and 32 outdoor terrace seats. Located in a business district, the restaurant opens at 6:30 AM and serves dishes and sweets made with Japanese tea until closing at 11:00 PM.

For breakfast, from 6:30 AM to 11:00 AM, they offer ochazuke (500 yen), which consists of tea rice (with unlimited refills) poured over roasted green tea and bonito broth. Choose from eight toppings, including plum, salmon, and grilled mackerel, and all come with five condiments, including pickled plums, wasabi, and nori seaweed. In the summer, you can also enjoy "chilled ochazuke," made by chilling tea and broth. The lunch menu, available from 11am, includes dishes such as special sea bream chazuke (880 yen).

The cafe menu, available from 2pm, includes a lineup of "tea sweets" such as the "Japanese Acai Bowl" (980 yen, also available during breakfast), which is made with adzuki beans and other ingredients to go perfectly with tea, matcha pudding (630 yen), and various tea ice creams. A dedicated tea brewing staff, known as "cha bariers," will prepare the tea using the appropriate brewing method and temperature according to the tea leaves. Tea is also used at dinnertime, from 5pm. A la carte dishes that incorporate tea, such as matcha potato salad (580 yen) and steak with matcha miso sauce, are available, allowing you to enjoy dishes made with Japanese tea from morning to night.
