Syd Mead, an industrial and futurist designer (visual futurist artist), was born on July 18, 1933, in Minnesota, USA. After graduating from high school in Colorado, he worked as an animator at a film production company in Colorado Springs. He then received a scholarship from Ford Motor Company to attend the Art Center School (now Art Center College) in Los Angeles, majoring in industrial design. In 1959, he joined Ford Motor Company, where he was responsible for numerous car designs. Two years later, he joined U.S. Steel, where he produced industrial design catalogs using steel materials. His futuristic designs were highly praised, and Syd's name gradually became known in the industry. In 1970, he went independent and founded Syd Mead & Co. in Detroit. Syd's first film project was Star Trek, released in 1979. In this work he was in charge of designing the artificial life form "Vidjar." Furthermore, when his drawing of the expressway "Express Highway" in his personal art book "Sentinel," published around the same time, caught the eye of film director Ridley Scott, he was then hired as a car designer for the film "Blade Runner." Sid's work impressed the director, and he eventually worked on the entire worldview of the film.

After that, Sid worked as a futurist designer on numerous films, including "2010" and "Aliens." This would have a huge influence on the worldviews that would appear in later science fiction works. In 1999 he was in charge of mecha design for the science fiction anime "Turn A Gundam," which made him famous in Japan as well.
