Ernest Miller Hemingway was born on July 21, 1899, in Illinois, USA. He died on July 2, 1861.
After an active childhood, learning to fish and hunt from his father, it wasn't until he entered high school that he discovered his literary talent. He became editor of the weekly newspaper published on campus and contributed numerous articles to the quarterly magazine that was also published at the time. After graduating, he got a job at the Kansas City Star, a Missouri newspaper. He left after just over six months and served in World War I as a Red Cross soldier attached to the Italian army.
After the war, he moved to Chicago and again spent his days as a newspaper reporter. In 1821, he moved to Paris. It was around this time that Hemingway began writing poetry and novels. In 1823, he published the collection of short stories, "Three Short Stories and Ten Poems." Although the initial print run was small, with only 300 copies, this was the opportunity for Hemingway to resign from his job at the Toronto Daily Star newspaper and begin his career as a writer.
In 1926, he published his first full-length novel, "The Sun Also Rises," which sold millions of copies and made Hemingway famous. In 1929, he published "A Farewell to Arms," a novel based on his experiences as a soldier in World War I, which again achieved bestseller status. This work became one of his most representative works. When the Spanish-American War broke out in 1936, he entered Spain as a correspondent for the North American Newspaper Association. He continued to write articles in support of the Republican Army and drew on these experiences to publish "For Whom the Bell Tolls" in 1940.
He continued to be active in the field, traveling to the battlefields during World War II as a reporter, and his "The Old Man and the Sea," published in 1952, won the Pulitzer Prize. These works were highly acclaimed, and he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954. However, Hemingway was involved in an airplane accident and was unable to attend the award ceremony. Perhaps due to the aftereffects of this accident, he committed suicide with a rifle in 1961 at the young age of 61.
His masculine, machismo-infused works and personal style have also influenced the fashion world. Yamashita Hirofumi's men's brand "MOJITO" is themed around Hemingway. The brand name is taken from the cocktail he loved. Fashion brand "N.HOOLYWOOD" presented a collection for its 2012-13 Autumn/Winter collection, centering on Hemingway's classic style, as well as military and worker styles from his time as a Red Cross soldier. Furthermore, perfume brand "HISTORIES de PARFUMS" has released "1899 Eau de Parfum," inspired by Hemingway. His great-granddaughter is Dree Hemingway, who has modeled for Givenchy, Calvin Klein, Chanel, and others, and has had a partnership with Cole Haan for several years.
