What you need to know to find wonderful treasures. A stroll through Paris flea markets with Tomo-kun -- Part 2 [Paris Special]

Dec 3, 2014

With the spoils he collected after visiting five flea markets, we spoke to Paris flea market specialist Tomoaki Shimizu about their appeal and shopping tips.

--What is the appeal of flea markets to you, Shimizu?

They are a treasure trove of ideas, and there is no end to discoveries. It's surprising and moving to see how well items have been cared for and preserved to this day, and it gives you a sense of respect and gratitude for the things that have survived so long. When items are in poor condition, it's also fun to restore them to their original condition as closely as possible. Flea markets make you realize that there are many old but still usable items, and they give you an opportunity to think about the current global issue of overproduction and consumption.

--What are your must-haves when visiting a flea market?

First of all, don't dress too nicely. Prices are almost always quoted, so if you look rich, you might get ripped off (lol). Newspaper or shopping bags to wrap your purchases aren't often provided, so it's a good idea to bring your own.

--What should I be careful of in the shops?

First, greet the shop staff. This makes a big difference. Asking if you can touch the items beforehand makes an even better impression. When sightseeing, you'll want to take photos, but only after getting permission.

--Honestly, it looks like a lot of junk, so how can you find something nice?

The most important thing is to go back multiple times and look at all the items. In my case, I sometimes go to the market five days a week. Sometimes I discover a damaged item after returning it, or I end up buying something too expensive, so I make mistakes. But I think it's those experiences that help me become a good shopper. Even now, I still get carried away and buy things when I come to the market, so I'm learning every day.

--I heard that you take good care of your loot after you get home. What items are most useful for that?

Melamine sponges, various French metal polishing cleaners, and gasoline. I often buy the cleaners at BHV department store.

--How do you find out about market events?

I often find them online. I often check vide-greniers.org and brocabrac.fr.

Shimizu-san is planning to hold a flea market event at his Daikanyama shop "pupi et mimi" from December 5th. I'd like to go and experience the charm of Parisian vintage items.
