The International Woolmark Prize (IWP) 2014-2015 Asia Regional Final, sponsored by The Woolmark Company, was held on July 17th at Andaz Tokyo in Toranomon Hills. Sise, designed by Masami Matsui, was selected as the Asia representative for the newly launched men's wear category. The women's wear category went to Vmajor, a Chinese brand designed by Nicole Lin and Victor Zhu. Sise's creations featured layered styles, made entirely from wool, from jackets and pants to knitwear. "As a capsule collection, I was able to forget about the usual Sise collections and do what I wanted," Matsui said. "I think they appreciated the fact that I faithfully created what I think is cool at the moment. This time, I only had one piece, but at the global finals in January, I'll be able to make six, so it will have a different feel. My international collection, which was once theoretical, is now one step closer to reality." Inspired by the Himalayan people and their designs, which create new shapes by wrapping and tying their clothing, Vimea expressed their joy, saying, "I would like to thank everyone involved."
Jury member Thakoon Panichgul, designer of Thakoon, said, "I could sense their passion to present their work on a global scale. To be successful on the global stage, it is necessary to understand global trends and know what customers want in stores in Paris and New York." Angelica Zhang, editor-in-chief of Vogue China, commented, "Asian designers are evolving. This year's works were not only highly creative but also of high quality, and were created with the wearer in mind. I sensed that they are growing at an extremely rapid pace and developing their own unique style."
Additionally, GQ Japan Editor-in-Chief Suzuki Masafumi commented, "The works we chose were ones that have a modern, youthful feel and are wearable. I also think Makoto Onohara and Bunzo Kado of Amber (who were not selected) are very talented." Nakagawa Hajime, assistant general manager of the women's and children's department at Isetan Mitsukoshi, said, "I judged from the perspective of a buyer. The editor-in-chief of Angelica and the designers of Thakoon were more concerned about the business side of things than I expected, so there were no differences of opinion."
Cissé will compete in the international judging for the menswear category to be held during London Men's Collection in January next year. Vimajor will compete in the international judging for the womenswear category to be held in Beijing in March.
