"Dog Family Tree" Exhibition Combining Depth, Mystery, and Loveliness

Dec 9, 2014

From December 19th to January 14th, painter and illustrator Yoriko Teruda's "Dog Genealogy" exhibition will be held at GALLERY SPEAK FOR in Daikanyama. The exhibition features transparent watercolors of lion-like dogs, goldfish that borrow the form of carp, pictorialized characters, and auspicious symbols by modern women. Rich in gradation and intricacy, the works are based on traditional patterns and concepts, but also contain a certain degree of misalignment and incongruity due to their mixed culture. Born from a perspective gained through observation of Asian beliefs, worldviews, and ideas of happiness in India, China, the Korean Peninsula, and Japan, her works blend depth, mystery, and charm. The exhibition title comes from her "Shishikoma" series, which best embodies her approach to painting. "In the lion guardian deity, which was brought to Japan for religious purposes in ancient times and later evolved from a lion into a dog, I continue to see correlations with the history of pet dogs and the history of the people who have lived alongside them," Teruda writes.
New works by Shishikoma form the backbone of this exhibition, and in addition to archive works such as "Fukuji" and "Immortality," approximately 40 works will be on display and for sale, including original drawings of various sizes, giclee prints, and three-dimensional works. Also available for sale will be accessories, clutch bags, cushions, original daruma dolls, and shimenawa decorations with a Shishikoma motif.
