Shonan roaster 27 coffee, Hawaiian plates, and a drive-in cafe on Shichirigahama Beach

Mar 17, 2015

Pacific DRIVE-IN, a drive-in cafe based on the concept of Hawaiian plate lunches, will open in the Shichirigahama Beach parking lot on March 30th. Located on the ocean side of Route 134, the cafe's food menu includes the "Garlic Shrimp Plate" (1,250 yen), a specialty of Kahuku, Hawaii; the "Kalua Pork Plate" (1,150 yen), featuring pork steamed for four hours and stir-fried with kale; and the "Mochiko Chicken Plate" (1,000 yen), featuring fried chicken made with glutinous rice flour. Other items on the menu include the "BLTA Sandwich" (1,100 yen), made with the cafe's original "Butter Rich" square bread, which boasts the mellow aroma of fermented butter, and the "Buttermilk Pancakes" (900 yen), served on the cafe's original, chewy milk buns. These menu items were developed by Wakana of W Factory and DJ PANCAKEMIX (a.k.a. pipparatree), the owners of the natural yeast bakery Wakanapan + SUNDAY JAM, which relocated from Zushi to Hayama this spring. The cafe also serves coffee roasted by Shonan roaster 27 COFFEE ROASTERS. The menu includes a fragrant, dark-roasted single-origin blend, sweet iced coffee with a caramelized roast, and espresso. Additionally, as a shop insight, NAKAMURA GENERAL STORE, a Hawaiian pastry shop making its Kanto debut, will be opening. The owner, previously worked as a pastry chef at Diamond Head Market & Grill, a renowned Hawaiian plate lunch and scone shop, before opening a standalone store in Kyoto in 2012. The cafe has become so popular that it often sells out by the evening. This time, they will be selling a limited number of their popular "Blueberry Cream Cheese Scones."

The interior design was handled by Kunichi Nomura of "TRIPSTER." The high ceilings, using natural materials, and large windows overlooking the ocean blend seamlessly into the scenery. Works by various artists are displayed throughout the cafe, including art themed around the sea, sun, and sand, as well as photographs taken mainly in Hawaii and Shichirigahama. The simple woodgrain exterior is colorfully adorned with sign painting. Other items, such as takeout cups and coffee mugs, feature casual yet catchy illustrations of Enoshima, Mount Fuji, and surfers.

Meanwhile, the staff uniforms, based on a "PREPPY BEACH" theme, were designed by BEAMS. Oxford button-down shirts, chinos, and chino skirts are the main items, along with two-way denim sarongs and hooded parkas. The large logo on the truck cap is inspired by waves and wind, and is also featured as patches and embroidery on other items.

Collaboration goods with Snoopy have also been released, including tote bags and shoulder bags. They feature original prints of a tanned Snoopy and Woodstock carrying a surfboard on a car. A collaboration has also been achieved with the select shop "SUNDAYS BEST." Using illustrations designed by the shop, a tool bag has been created for use at the fictional "PACIFIC DRIVE-IN PARKING SERVICE."
