Issey Miyake creates limited edition items using the latest technology of 3D steam stretch and color palette extraction

Sep 1, 2015

ISSEY MIYAKE will open a pop-up shop called "Colorscope Omoiiro" at the Isetan Shinjuku Main Building's 4th floor Center Park/The Stage #4 from September 2nd to 8th.

The brand's theme for this season is "Colorscope," inspired by the infinite colors of a kaleidoscope and the structures created by nature. The shop will feature items created using "3D steam stretching," a technology that enables the expression of monochromatic to multicolored fabrics, and "Omoiiro," a color palette extraction technology developed by Alexis Andre, a researcher at Sony Computer Science Laboratories.

"Omoiiro" is a system that classifies colors in photographs and paintings into a range discernible by human vision, digitizes them, and extracts colors from the image. The area occupied by a color in the photograph is not proportional to the area of the extracted color, allowing it to retain accent colors even if they only occupy a small area on the photograph.

At the venue, bags (six colors, 16cm height x 26cm width / 68,000 yen) and brooches (six colors, 8cm height x 9cm width / 18,000 yen) exclusive to the shop, created through a collaboration between the two technologies, will be on sale.
