Around Shinjuku Station, approximately 400 pieces of art will be displayed at the Shinjuku Creators Festa 2015.

Sep 2, 2015

Shinjuku Creators Festa 2015 is currently underway, showcasing approximately 400 artworks and transforming various locations around Shinjuku Station into art spaces. This year marks the fifth year of the event, welcoming new artists such as sculptor Toshihiko Hosaka and street artists MOT8 and Cho Hikaru. Even in the media- and information-filled city of Shinjuku, these eye-catching artworks stop people in their tracks, entertaining children and adults alike. One of the great attractions of this event is the free access to the artworks in an open space. Artworks are featured in More 4th Avenue, the passage in front of Seibu Shinjuku PePe, and the office buildings at the West Exit, so you can enjoy the artworks at any time, allowing you to experience different aspects depending on the time of day. Photographer Hiroyuki Yamashita's "Another World," held at Hiltonpia Art Square on the first basement floor of the Hilton Tokyo, captured the dramatic expressions of buildings symbolizing each of the Kanto region's cities in the quiet of the night. Because sunlight, which is expressed at a single temperature, disappears at night, photographers can capture the various temperatures of light, such as fluorescent and LED lights, in their photographs. Against a backdrop of various deep blue tones, the cityscapes and buildings, distinct from their daytime appearances, assert their individual contours and emerge with a new presence. Amazingly, these images were never post-processed using Photoshop or other software. This year, Yamashita held his first two-day photo seminar. The event also features an annual Artist Night, where visitors can meet and talk with exhibiting artists, providing an opportunity to get closer to the art.

Works by video artist Shinichi Yamamoto and artist/designer Kazumasa Teshigahara will be screened* approximately every two minutes per hour on Shinjuku's giant screens Alta Vision, Flags Vision, Yunika Vision, and EST Vision by Lumine Est.

The giant screens, which are decorated daily with various advertising messages, will be instantly taken over by the overwhelming works of world-renowned artists, creating an alienating effect on the space that can only be felt in the city, and we invite you to experience this in the streets of Shinjuku.
