A collaboration between Mika Ninagawa and Sumida Aquarium. A fantastical space of jellyfish and kaleidoscopes dyed in Ninagawa's colors.

Sep 9, 2015

On September 9th, the Sumida Aquarium in Tokyo Skytree Town unveiled the "Mika Ninagawa x Sumida Aquarium Jellyfish Kaleidoscope Tunnel," produced by photographer and film director Mika Ninagawa. This project, the first collaboration between Mika Ninagawa and Sumida Aquarium, stimulates visitors' five senses through not only video, music, and creatures, but also aromatherapy and lighting. Covering three walls and ceilings with approximately 5,000 mirrors, the 50-meter-long tunnel-like space is adorned with vibrant Ninagawa colors, and photographs and videos projected into the space move freely above and on the walls of the tunnel's eight jellyfish tanks. A representative from Sumida Aquarium expressed his hopes for this collaboration, saying, "We hope that Mika Ninagawa, who serves as a director of the Tokyo Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, will further promote Tokyo and Sumida Aquarium." All of the images used in the "Kaleidoscope" are new and were created specifically for this project. Two different scenes are available: "Daytime," featuring tropical flowers and the sea, evoking a powerful sun, and "Night," featuring urban scenes of highways and neon lights. Some of the latter even include the Tokyo Skytree. The space, where two different worlds spin around, is truly a kaleidoscope. Viewing the floating jellyfish from the "inside" is a fantastical experience, perfect for the autumn season of art. During the exhibition, original "Mika Ninagawa x Sumida Aquarium" annual passes will be on sale. Additionally, a women-only adult viewing program, "Fluffy Jellyfish," will be held every Friday night.
