Hiroshi Sugimoto's solo exhibition at Costume National features a record of "The Life of a Candle"

Dec 10, 2015

Contemporary artist Hiroshi Sugimoto's solo exhibition, "Hiroshi Sugimoto 'In Praise of Shadows'," will be held at the CoSTUME NATIONAL Aoyama flagship store from December 12 to February 28, 2016.
Hiroshi Sugimoto is a world-renowned contemporary artist who has produced numerous masterpieces on the themes of "time," "light," and "modernism" through philosophical considerations and sophisticated photographic techniques. He has received the Mainichi Art Award, the Hasselblad International Photography Award, the Medal with Purple Ribbon, and the French Order of Arts and Letters.
The exhibition will feature his series, "In Praise of Shadows," which captures the life of a candle. The series was created by lighting a Japanese candle and taking long-exposure photographs with the shutter open until the flame burned out. The flame sways in the wind and constantly changes shape. The photographs become illusory candles that flicker in time with the burning candles, blurring the boundary with reality in the dim darkness.
